sit down reception or horderves?

Kyle and I are currently deciding if we should do a dinner buffet OR just have horderves served. Naturally I would mention on our invitations that it would be horderves, so no one avoids eating the day of. But what are your insites? Is it really that much more affordable? is the price difference really worth it? What are you doing?

We are doing appetizers from Hyvee for $11ppmeatballs, crab stuffed mushrooms, hot spinach and artichoke dip w bread, mini sandwhichs, boneless wings and then fruit trays, veggie trays and cheese trays. We are also setting out food at about 10pm for ppl to continue snacking on, that we are getting from Jasons Deli bc Spence works there and we can get it at a discount, we are budgeting about $120 for that.

It just really depends on where you go and who you use. Some places the horderves is much cheaper but other places a dinner buffett would be more affordable. Just all depends. We are doing heavy appetizers because that's what we wanted and could afford. My Aunt is doing it though. My FI was really adamant about everything. He said we are not trying to feed people and make them full. He said it's a token of our appreciation for them coming to share our special day on us. I realized I forgot to have heavy appetizers put on the invitations and we are picking them up today. I'm going to make a little insert to say reception is heavy appetizers only because I can't afford to pay for invitations to be re-done.

For us there wasn't much of a price difference since we would want a variety, but we're having our Reception start at 5:30pm and my dad also wanted to have them eat an actual dinner.

Heavy apps are pretty trendy right now.  I don't know that they're any cheaper though.

Our catering would be through Cafe Thyme [at powell gardens - where our reception will be - you must do your catering through them!] They had fully plated dinners which ranged from $18pp to $28.50pp! But the horderves options were not that bad - for instance there were buffalo/chicken wings [a huge favorite of Kyle's friends!] I guess it will all matter when we sit down with the head of catering and give her our budget to see what all she can do! I also think that at our reception - which is only 4 hours long people would not want to sit down and eat, they would be ready to party! Seeing as our reception is after 9pm! I do believe horderves are the best option for us! Thank you for all of your input. =]

Our reception started at around 9pm and we immediately went into a buffet dinner. People were out on the dance floor by 9:30. It can be done. Agree that hors d'ouevres (fyi-the correct spelling) can be as expensive if not more so than a buffet.

My FI and I are using Cafe Thyme as well. We picked the Cocktail style reception simply because at 9pm I dont think that would be very kind to make people wait for food. It's costing us a rather shinny penny for the catering and bar together. But The food quailty is well know to be very good.
