Cousin of the bride trying to help find reception sites

Hello.  I am posting this to help out my cousin.  I live in MD but she lives in Austin and just got engaged.  She is planning on having her wedding in Feb 2010 and she doesn't know where to start.  She called me yesterday asking dozens of questions about my wedding 2 years ago and I tried my best to help her out.  Her parents aren't helping pay for the wedding so they have to pay for everything themselves.  Can anyone recommend a nice but reasonably priced reception venue in the Austin area for about 100 people tops.  She mentioned maybe renting out a restaurant for an intimate sit down dinner.  Any suggestions would help and would be greatly appreciated.  I told her to get on theknot, as it would be her saving grace during this planning period, as it was for me when i was planning my wedding.  I know how helpful you brides can be!  Thanks so much in advanced for you help!

I am happy to help! I know how Austin can be very intimidating. The great news is because she is getting married in an off month she can get a great deal on venues. I am currently picking my venue. I am only having 60 to 70 people at my wedding. I like Hamilton 12, Shoreline Grille at town lake, Stephan F Austin Hotel (gave me a great deal!). I also loved vintage villas, loved Vista West Ranch too, but that one is really far out and you have to rent a lot. Let me know if you need anything else! I would happy to help!

Before she does anything else, she needs to know her budget! Without knowing what she's hoping to spend, it's hard to recommend places.

True!  Nail down a budget and don't let iffy contributers be iffy for long!!I'm using heritage oaks clubhouse in Georgetown.  It is $100 an hour but does not include linens, catering, etc.  They have a giant kitchen, though, so it allows for you to bring in a good amount of food yourself.  Also, the tables are beautiful and don't really require linens, if you want to go ultra casual. On the other hand, you can rent linens and find catering that is affordable, so the place is very versatile!

Ditto pp about it being a good thing that they are planning this during a non-peak wedding season month.  If she decides to go the restaurant route, I've heard very good things about Shoreline Grille.  It's got a beautiful view and yummy food.

We're having ours next March at Texas Old Town in Kyle (about 10min from Austin). It's a very sweet, nature-oriented venue. The rates are pretty reasonable, the staff is great, and you get the site for the entire day (and even the night before to set up if it isn't booked!)

A helpful link is the Austin Knottie Page (link in my siggy).  It has venues and other things that can be helpful.  It is not an exhaustive list by any means, but its a start.  GL!

There is a place that rents out in Georgetown called Heritage Oaks Clubhouse. 100.00 per hour and you can bring in your own catering and alcohol. You have to hire security at about 30 bucks an hour - if you serve alcohol. Really nice, new and owned by the Jimmy Jacobs community. I gave a good friend getting married there next month. Wish I had known about it. Check out the website you will be amazed. heritageoaksclubhouse dot com

Check out the Caswell House, which is where I had my wedding.   It's a pretty place and VERY reasonably priced.  It's owned by Austin Jr. Forum, a non-profit women's service organization.Sunday weddings there are only $700.www.caswellhouse.org
