Average cost for a Photographer

Hey all,

My cousin is a photographer and he offered to give us the basic package of 6 hours which includes a set of all images 4x6 and all photo access online for 9 months for $1800. Is that a lot? It seems to be since I dont get a DVD unless I pay $300.

Thoughts? I was looking to spend like $1200 for 6 hours + a DVD and prints.

Re: Average cost for a Photographer

  • Nope, that's about average for what I've seen.  I've seen very little for less than what he's offering.
    Anniversary
  • I am paying 1200 for my photographer and that includes a dvd and unlimited hours on the wedding day!

  • I'm having sticker shock at the cost of photographers & DJs. yikes!
  • That's about average but there are definitely cheaper options out there. Seems your cousin isn't cutting you a deal for being related, hunh? "yesnomaybe" gave you one suggestion and I can give you more if you're interested in them. Just send me a private message if you'd like some other suggestions. I'm paying $2500 for my photographers but i'm getting albums and a bunch of other stuff.

there are cheaper options. We ended up putting an ad on craigslist requesting a photographer and asking them to send samples of their work and we put a budget up. We got a TON of responses and found an amazing photographer in our budget. Good luck!
  • That is an awesome idea!! May have to use that one too!

  • on the cape $1800 to 3200 is the range... crazy but true...
  • I definitely was ok with splurging on our photographer, so ours was about twice that, including an extra charge for the DVD. So, that sounds pretty normal to me. Our package did include a second photog for part of the day, and a few extra hours.

It makes sense that photographers charge extra for the DVD, since it means you won't be ordering pictures from them and they lose that money. However, for a cousin, it does seem like he would have waived it...
  • Ours is $3900. As Karen's MOH pointed out, to me it made sense to splurge on an amazing, albeit expensive, photograper because the photos is what we'll have to keep forever to remember our day. So I'm spending basically 3x what I spent on my gown! With our photographer, there is no time limit of hours, she will stay as long as we want through the end of the reception if we choose, and she will have a second photog with her. We also get an album and some prints as well.
  • I think that's about an average price but I would think that it would come with a little more whether it be time coverage, second shooter or a disc. There are photographers in every price range onviously and for every budget. I currently offer 8 hours of coverage, a second shooter and a disc with printing rights for $1800.00. I'm still breaking into the wedding end of things although I have been doing families $ babies for awhile. You can check out my site at
