Photographer Problem (LONg)

Ok, I am like fuming mad right now, so I hope this all comes out right....I chose my photographer right when I first started planning (before I discovered the knot).  I was satisfied with him, but I must admit, that once I was on the knot and saw so many other bride's photographer, I felt his work was not "up to par".  I took my bridal portraits back in June.  A day and a half later they were uploaded to his website.  They looked like raw images and I thought I needed to chose my favorite 25 and then he would edit those. I sent him my favorites recently (yes I did procrastinate) and he said "I will have them to you in a week printed."  I asked when he was going to edit them, and he said that it was done and that any additional editing would be at an additional charge.  I wanted like my skin smoothed out, shadows taken out etc. and he said that is EXTRA? I thought that a large part of professional photography is the editing and making them looked finished???  Am I wrong?  Am I overreacting?  I just want to walk away and find someone else b/c I feel like I will be left with 600-800 raw images from my wedding day unedited. I am just so confused.... I am just so not happy with my portraits and I can only imagine how disappointed my wedding day images will be.  PS- Wedding is less than 2 months away. Thank you if you have read this long :)

eh, post processing can vary from photographer to photographer. Some will brush out every line, mole, stray hair, freckle, etc. & some prefer people to look more natural. (IMHO some I've seen even over-correct & make people look too artificial). Were his work examples similar to what yours looked like, or were they heavily corrected? I guess I'm trying to understand whether you were just expecting something different after seeing examples of other people's work on here, or if he grossly misrepresented his typical work.

Laud- The pictures on his website look edited (not heavily but a normal amount) and that is why we chose him- from the examples shown.  I don't feel my images look like that at all.

But maybe I don't know the difference btwn no editing, some and alot (if that makes sense).  Laud- Since I know you would give the honest truth, would you have time to look at his examples and my bridal portraits and tell me if you would be happy with them?  i would appreciate it more than anything :) email me at my sn @ gmail

I wish I had some advice. I would definitely be upset if I were in your shoes, but I don't know what I would do! Hopefully laud will take a look and then maybe you can talk to him about it and see if he's receptive to what you have to say? Sorry I'm not more help! But I definitely sympathize with you!

I really don't have much advice either, except maybe try to talk to him and say what you like about the photos of his that you had seen and see if he can't do anything to correct them.

YGM. I'm definately no pro, but I'm learning a lot from DH. He's quickly becoming a Photoshop CS guru :) At the least, I can show them to him, & he can tell me something about what your photog did/didn't do to them. Can you also send me a link to his site so I can see some of his other work?

I agree with pps. I would pick out a couple of pictures on his site and ask why they are not of the same quality or edited similarly.

Laud- YGM Thanks again girl :) I would share with the rest of the knotties because I am kinda embarassed by them.  :(

I'm so sorry you're disappointed.  I do agree with what Laud already said...that the amount of editing can vary from one to another but they should be representative of the work he photographer showed you.Did you ask how much extra the editing is?  Would that be an option? (yes it sucks but it may work)However, no matter whether he misrepresented his work or it just isn't what you invisioned, you need to decide if you will be happy with him as your wedding photographer.  What does your contract say about cancellations?  Can you afford another photographer?  Some photogs (well ok I know of one specifically), if they are available this close to your wedding day, will give you a "last minute deal" because they would rather make some money than none at all.IDK what else to tell you really.

PS- Don't be embarassed.  If they are really that bad, the photographer should be embarassed :-P

Can I ask who you're using? Also - have you found another cake person yet? I found someone willing to do my cupcakes for about .5 cent cheaper each than Kim! =-)

YGM, but here's a synposis for everyone else.1. YOU are gorgeous.2. No, these are not on par w/ the amount of post processing in any of the examples on the site.3. If I had thought that I would be getting a portrait that looked similar to the examples on the site, & then gotten your photos & was told that was it, I would not be very happy either.

sounds like the photog has gone lazy on you....if you can afford another one for your wedding i would go that direction. if you arent happy with the work now, it probably wont be any better for your wedding.i am really sorry this is happening to you so close to your wedding.

Laud- I am about to write you back.  But I have a question, am I allowed to say on the board  who I am using???

I just want to say, that my photographer def told us extra editing is extra money. But he will be editing all our pictures that go into the album and the 16x20 without charge. The rest of the pictures, if i want more editing then its extra.
  • edited December 2011
If he never told u about the extra charges before you signed the contracted or if it's not written in the contract, then i would say something!!
  • edited December 2011
sorry about all the posts, but i think you should post them. I bet you look beautiful no matter what!
  • edited December 2011
i agree with laudi... my take is that a vendor shows you one thing and delivers something else then that is misrepresentation and awful business practices. so i'd staplel his britches to the wall. what would you think if you went for your cake tasting and tasted a custom cake with a real buttercream icing but on your wedding day got a cake mix cake and icing made with crisco shortening and butter flavor....same thing applies. my hubby is a graphic artist so if you need another opinion then post something for everyone to see, get an opinion and be a dirty deleter tomorrow. by all means, if you are not happy with the pics then you have an issue to resolve asap.
  • edited December 2011
Lisa- no, nothing is mentioned in the contract about editing and/or extra charges.

ok so i would go crazy on them!! Maybe they'll end up throwing it in for free. If not, and you can afford it, I would go with a different person.Sorry your dealing with this nonsense!

Okay to add to the drama... I'm using the same photographer next year. (fyi, Not the same as who I used for epics) So, obviously i was really nervous when I read all of this! BUT, I've seen the pics and I think that there are a lot of really great ones! He did have some on there that weren't that great, but I think most photographers have to take lots of pictures to get great ones. I know that when we spoke to him, he didn't quote us that much for the bridal session, so I don't know if he puts a lot into it, or as much as he does the wedding pics. Hopefully, the wedding pics will be more processed. I plan to talk to him about this too. However, I tend to like a less processed and more natural look anyways! Courtney, they are beautiful!

Hello...I know who you are using too.  And my best friend used them for her wedding last October...personally, I was not that impressed with the wedding photos but she was pleased (which is all that matters). I love photography and am very picky, whereas my friend is not and likes the more candid look.  I noticed that they do not look for details - they really take candid type photos...which like my friend, some people like and prefer.  I mean there are some absolutely wonderful ones, don't get me wrong, and they took a lot!  But overall, I understand what you are referring to.  She has not gotten her album yet (she proctrastinated at getting it done!).I have all of her pro-wedding photographs on my computer if you would be interested in me sending you some or I would be more than happy to burn you a cd and mail them to you.  My email is rebekahlindsey at gmail dot com

I am so busy at work right now, but I wanted to thank all of you for responding.  This week I feel like my head is going to explode with this drama, AND all the cake drama as well, plus realizing I have less than 2 months to go!  I will let everyone know what we figure out :)

Someone please post who it is so we can all be aware. I think vendor reviews on here are a great idea.
