spanx/shapewear recommendations?

I have never worn any kind of shapewear and wonder if anyone has any recommendations. Does it really work?

Re: spanx/shapewear recommendations?

  • We were required to wear Spanx for rush in college (insert awful sorority joke). To be honest... they are UNCOMFORTABLE. I still wear them from time to time, but I refuse to wear them during my wedding. I just bought the Spanx knock-offs at Target. I would definitely buy a pair and see how you feel in them. Like I said, I'm glad to wear them occasionally, like a banquet or something, but it's definitely one of those 'pain is beauty' sort of things.
  • I just bought my first pair of spanx.  Our engagement pictures are tomorrow and I want to wear a form fitting white dress, so I just wanted something to help hide the imperfectons.  The one I got is like a high waist shorts piece.  It helps push everything together and smoothes you out, but it isn't the most comfortable thing.  I definitely wouldn't wear it during my wedding.

  • As the other girls have said, it's not the most comfortable thing on the planet.  It's compressionwear, so you're going to feel squeezed.   It sure works, but you're going to know you're wearing it to say the least.  If you're going to do it, be sure you get the correct size; some people think "smaller means it'll work better!" but it can actually be problematic.  If you wear the type that comes up your ribcage and it's too small (or you wear more than one, don't do that either!) you can pull an Elizabeth Swan and pass out from an inability to breathe properly.

If your concern is more in the butt region, I'd recommend just getting some of the briefs or shorts.  Briefs are good if you only have butt issues, but if you have upper leg/thigh issues the shorts are pretty magical.
  • I thought this would be great at first too for under my dress. However, one of my good friends is a waittress and I know she wears them all the time. I brought the idea up to her and she said the same thing as the PP's and that they make you extremely hot.

  • I'm a plus sized bride and want to be as smooth as possible.  I just bought the "Slim Cognito Mid-Thigh bodysuit" at Lane Bryant today.  I bought the Target "Assets" version and I found the material to be subpar and almost immediately upon pulling it up it started to roll down... I returned it..  The real one that I bought today has a very nice fabric and and held me in just the right places with no rolling even without using the included straps to attach to your bra.  I think it really depends on the body type and the person.
  • Thanks for your help! They have so many products it's hard to choose. For the Spanx brand, what exactly have you tried? I am thin but just want to be sucked in on my stomach since I have small breasts. I don't mind being uncomfortable becausse of the Spanx. My dress is a mermaid style and thus already uncomfortable. At this point, I just want to feel comfortable about MYSELF even if I am physically uncomfortable. A word to future brides though, buy a dress that you will be comfortable in!

  • Thank you for your help. I think that is the one I am going to buy too. I bought one from Bethany Frankel's shapewear line because it was cheaper but it didnt seem to do anything > you get what you pay for sometimes! Now I'm going to order the read deal.
