WR Vent: MOB Dress uncheck.......... (Lengthy sorry)

So my mom ordered her dress about 10 weeks ago and it took her 2 months to find a dress.  She hates like every dress she tries on and is super hard to shop with because she thinks she looks horrible in everything.  So she finally found a dress after looking for months, orders it 10 weeks ago and it came in Tuesday.  The salon called her as she had been down there last week as it was due in after 8 weeks and they were giving her a run around.  So being herself and always thinking she is overweight, she was convinced that the dress wouldn't fit her but they couldn't do alterations for another 2 weeks.  So she went down yesterday to find out they ordered a teal cheetah print dress instead of the solid teal dress she ordered.  She's so upset and sick over this that she has been crying for like a day straight and she is calling out sick from work tomorrow.  The lady at the dress shop gave her the deposit back, but is doing basically nothing else to remedy the situation.  I'm beyond pissed at this point because now I am going to spend the next however long finding her another "perfect" dress.  I've called most of the surrounding stores to find the dress in her size on the rack but of course none of them have it.  I'm pretty close to going to the original store and b*tching the lady out that now I'm dealing with this mess 1 month from my wedding.  My mom doesn't really want me going down there but she's more distraught over this dress than I've ever seen her.  What would you do?

CN Version: Took mom months to find a dress, ordered it, came in 2 weeks late in cheetah teal print instead of solid teal.  Original store gave her refund but won't help her look for the replacement dress, but will give her money off another dress in store but she doesn't want to buy there again.  WWYD?

  • I would go to the store & make them pay for the express delivery...and still give her the deposit back...

I wouldn't buy from that store either...Is she plus size??  If so, have her check out the clearance racks at the local salons, check out DB, the department stores like Macy's, Nordstrom's, Dillard's, etc. to see what they have on their racks...I know they all carry plus sizes...Depending how fancy she wants to get, try Lane Bryant....I was looking at the site the other day and they have formal dresses you can order:

    http://www.lanebryant.com/plus-size-dresses-skirts/dressy-dresses/4031c1043/index.cat

Also Catherines has a good selection:

  • also if your purchase from them online, you can have them shipped to the store for free & she can try it on there, if she doesn't like it she can return it right in store (depending if it is a LB or Catherine's item, has to be returned to the right store).
  • Thanks LM.  She is pretty much dead set on getting this dress, we found one that was extremely similar but didn't have the same side brooch.  I'm literally on the designers website looking up who sells the design and am calling them tomorrow to find it on the rack.

Also she is not plus size, nor overweight, just average sized but short so a lot of short dresses are too long.  She's just being a major PITA about this, which is understandable but is getting a bit ridiculous.

  • I don't blame her for not wanting to go back.  At least they gave you your money back. =\

My mom got her dress from Macy's off the rack.  I'd suggst going there.  They normally have a great selection.  You can also buy online from them in the size you'd need and have it ASAP.  Any department store will have formal dresses and that would be where I was headed because of the short time frame.

    Good luck!

  • OMGosh!  I am so sorry that you are dealing with this.  That is absolutely awful!  Who gets a cheetah print dress for a wedding.  How on earth did they screw that up???  I hope you can find it somewhere!

  • I would go to the store, b!tch them out, and make them re-order it and get it in fast. But I also don't blame her for not wanting to do business with them anymore. Hopefully you're able to find it off the rack tomorrow.

  • Oh no - I'm really sorry about this situation! Not trying to be harsh here, but I think your mom should be a little more mature about the situation. Crying for two days seems excessive. She should realize that you are the one getting married and her freaking out about her dress a month before your wedding is not going to be good for your stress level.  I think if she should get it together and b!tch the store out, as Meagan said. But if you can find it elsewhere, I would do so. I wouldn't want to give that store my business after they were unhelpful and screwed things up.

And - Cheetah dress WTF?? Can you PIP the dresses? I'm honestly just curious what a teal cheetah print MOB dress even looks like.

Michelle, take your MOB into Fall River at Party Dress Express. Dresses can be ordered, some designers (cough alfredangelo cough) are a few months out on sending dresses out. BUT! Yes this warrants a huge but, Dresses can be purchased off the rack.

(Also about Party dress express, owned/run by some of the sweetest older ladies. They make sure things are smooth and Honest.)

They have a website that doesn't do much justice compared to the store. My mom lost 75 lbs and we had a weekend of hunting down dresses. We got her MOB dress for $99 off the clearance rack.

I can also recommend consignment shops that might help too.
  • So for all laughs here is the dress she got:  http://www.jasminebridal.com/ugC_Product_Detail.asp?hidP_kind=MOB&hidP_style=JADE%20COUTURE&hidj_line_order=2&hidP_Style_ID=K148014

    And the one she wanted:

The style number for the solid dress has an "x" on the end of it, whoever ordered it ordered without the "x"

We found the tea-length dress version of this dress at a store, but she complained that is too boring and needs some bling (which is a good possibility!): http://www.jasminebridal.com/ugC_Product_Detail.asp?hidP_kind=MOB&hidP_style=JADE&hidj_line_order=1&hidP_Style_ID=J145061

Hallanole - Thanks for the idea of consignment shop, Party Dress Express is on my list of places to call.

  • Oooh I really like the one your mom intended to order. It's very nice!

For the tea length one, what if she got that, and then got a brooch separately that she could pin on, to bling it out a little?

  • Seriously? That's awful...I really dont understand why it is so hard for some of these dress shops to get things right?! If you have a question, call and ask just dont go and order the wrong thing!  This happened to my sister, she is my MOH - - they ordered her the wrong dress (luckily we like it but that's not the point) and said that it was the dress she ordered, or she must have tried it on, we never saw the dress they ordered.  It's really rotten of these shops that are making a ton of money, mind you.

  • Okay, so add some of your own bling to it....you can find broaches all over the place now =)
  • omg my mom and I went through the same thing! Took her forever to find a dress, finally did, it came in late a few weeks ago and it was the wrong color AND the wrong size! So it wouldn't even fit her because it was too small. The dress store tried blaming it on the designer. We just got our money back and went to a different boutique last week to find a dress. SO stressful and I don't get how they can make these mistakes.

My mom got her dress from Party Dress Express and they were the nicest easiest place I have ever been to. My mom was in and out of the store in 30 min!! :) The dress came in like 2 weeks too! I couldn't say more positive things about them. I would definitely check them out michelle. I would also b*tch out the lady about your mom's dress, that is just ridiculous! Goodluck!

  • I love the dress your mom intended to order!!!

And I expected to die laughing when I saw the blue cheetah print - it's bad, but the cut/fit of the dress is so nice it actually isn't as horrible as I had expected to be haha!

I don't have any other suggestions, but good luck finding the dress your mom wants.  Hopefully she will realize that she MIGHT have to make another selection if she can't find the exact same dress of the rack. But I agree with her - I wouldn't want to do business with the store that screwed up my order either!!
