I am not a fan of it. Nikon removed the auto-focus motor on the entry level dslr's (including the D5000). So you are really limited on the lens selections (which is what dslr's are all about). I will say this......camera bodies go obsolete every 3 yrs or so, lenses hold their value for yrs and that is where your investment should be. I would look at the new canon rebel or the 50d. If you want nikon at least go up to a model that has the autofocus motor in the camera body so you have more lens options.
Crap - you are right about the auto focus! That is one of the main components, but for some reason I was not seeing that in the reviews I was reading. MH and I are looking to buy a DLSR in the near future and I was leaning towards Nikon, but will look at the canon's now also. So IYO I should go to the d90 if we go Nikon? Thanks again
Yeah you will have to go up to the d90 to be able to take advantage of all of Nikons lens systems. Honestly, in my opinion nikon doesn't have an edge over canon until you get to the full frame professional models. Nikon leads with flash technology, but canon offers more and more affordable lens options. You can't go wrong with the d90, but the new t1i is such a bargain for what you are getting. Do you have any photography experience with an slr? What are you going to use it for primarily?
I love photography and have signed up for a class just a basic class, but I want to get more into it. I have little experience with a DSLR, but I just looked at the canon and it looks awesome. I just told MH that is the one that we should get. I am looking for some prices, but I would like to have it with in the next few weeks. We go on our honeymoon in November to St. Thomas and I was to get used to using it before that trip to get some really good pictures.
Sounds good....... The kit lens (18-55) is a nice start. To compliment it for your trip, I would go for the canon 55-250 zoom. It's has surprisingly good image quality for the money, it's a bargain at only about 225 dollars. I took this picture with that lens on our honeymoon.
That picture is amazing! I am looking at us1photo they seem to have the best price and this is what they are offering for $779:Canon Canon EOS Rebel T1i (500D) 15.1Megapixel Digital SLR Camera Kit w/ EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens15.1Mp CMOS SensorHD 1080p, 720p, and VGA Video Capture3\" Clear View LCD with Live ViewDIGIC...15.1Mp CMOS SensorHD 1080p, 720p, and VGA Video Capture3\" Clear View LCD with Live ViewDIGIC 4 Image ProcessorISO Expandable to 12,800EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS LensCompatible w/ 60-plus EF & EF-S Optics
Looks good. J&R also has it for 810 and it qualifies for the microsoft cashback deal which is at around 10% I think. Abes of Maine has a good sale right now on compact flash cards. Get a few 4 or 8 gig sandisk extreme III.
