MFP Question- Splurge

I'm going to my friend's restaurant in Philadelphia on Sunday, and indulging in all kinds of naughty things: foie, butter, red meat, pastries... yum!  Its a rare splurge, so I don't feel guilty about it and I'm not looking for a way to moderate it.  My question is- I use My Fitness Pal to track calories, and have lost about 15 lbs on it, so go me!  How should I enter this meal?  Just guesstimate 1,000 calories and leave it at that? Or skip a day?

Re: MFP Question- Splurge

  • I have just not tracked before when I really don't know what I'm eating. If you know and accept that you are going over your limit is there really a reason to track it? The reason I track my food is to make sure I'm staying within a reasonable calorie limit so I see no reason to really keep track of it if you know you're going outside of that limit. That is a rare occassion, but I've done it once or twice. The other thing is if I know I have a recipe that's similar to something I'm eating at a restuarant I will try and use that as a base.

  • agreed with Maribeth! I don't think it's a terrible thing to skip an entry on a rare occassion....as long as it IS a rare occassion, and doesnt just become "every saturday" haha
  • Thanks!  I was thinking of entering a guess at the number, so if I'm not losing like I want to I can go back and check if I overdid the splurge days and adjust accordingly.  We're doing a tasting menu, and the dishes aren't anything you would find in MFP, so I have a hard time getting an accurate count.

<div>I would still track it. It's soooo easy to get out of the habit of tracking and I feel like when I know I have to sit down and look everything up on MFP I am overall more aware of eating decisions in a scenario like this. My vote is to just sort of take a mental note of the foods you're eating and do a general search on MFP database to see if you can find something comparable.</div>

  • Its dishes like "Seared foie gras with gingerbread crumble and huckleberry caviar", and probably 6-10 very small courses, so I think it would be near impossible to accurately track. Would it be an OK compromise to guesstimate the food and enter the alcohol correctly?

  • Maybe you could look up the individual ingredients? If you know what some of them are. The hard thing is you don't know how they are cooked, like with butter, oil, etc, etc. Also I know for me I'm terrible at eyeballing portion sizes. I find I am always underestimating how much I'm eating. If you really want to try and track I would say you have to just try guesstimate or look up some of the individual indredients, like caviar, and see how much they are worth. I wouldn't know any other way to do it. The alcohol can probably be tracked pretty accurately.
