cacoffer

So I noticed in your bio that you're doing the couch to 5k. How is that going for you? I always wanted to try it, but I am so out of shape that I'm pretty sure I'd have some kind of attack and expire before day one was over. Also, you are my weight loss hero.

Re: cacoffer

  • I found a podcast that goes through the couch to 5k program, switching music and giving cues for each run/walk period. I made it through day 1. Running for 30 or 60 seconds doesn't SOUND that bad on paper... ugh. I am also interested to hear how it is going.

  • I tried going for a jog yesterday with Noodle (I skipped my Jazzercise) and it didn't go so well. He was irritated at how slow I was going and the fact my jumblies were bouncing around like a pair of overactive 5 year olds.

  • You're braver than me, Nugget. Buddy brought up exercising together once and I told him that if he wanted to stay my friend he'd never mention that again. He works out 4 days a week. I'd feel like a miserable tub trying to work out with him.

  • TJ - my greatest accomplishment thus far, is being able to run 5 minutes non-stop.  I am so not a runner.
  • Well I definately don't see a tub of lard in any of your pictures. I'm totally going to try this 5k thing now, starting next week. If I have an attack and die, I'm coming back to haunt both of you.

  • I wish FI would work out with me.  He's seriously overweight.  While I've lost 30 - he's gained 5 (at least that's what he told me.  It could be more).
  • cacoffer - Believe me, I understand what a huge accomplishment that is. Good for you, sincerely. I'm using the temperature as an excuse for now (even getting up at 4:30am, it's already climbing above 90 degrees, heading for over 110), but as soon as fall kicks in, I'm either going to run or ride my bike (it's a beach cruiser so we're not talking about speed here). Weight watchers is working for now and I could probably carry on just fine with just the diet for awhile, but I don't want to be thin and wimpy.

  • I got you girl.  Like I said, if I can do it - you'll have no problems!
  • Jane, I have the opposite problem - I live in Minnesota, so when it hits October it starts to get too cold to go jogging and play outside. And having to go from the gym all sweaty and gross into your car in 30 degree below zero weather in December sucks donkey balls.

  • I've got the Wii fit for inside stuff but no actual place to use it right now. PLUS, it goes "oof!" when I step on it. Jerk Wii Fit.

  • Commentary from the Wii? I don't need that in my life. But, the biking sounds like a great start.  My sister biked and coupled with dietary changes - lost about 60 lbs.
  • I am about to go for my fourth workout since my wedding last October. What I would like to know is, how does my dog still remember my sports bra. Everytime I put it on he starts wimpering like crazy because he thinks we are going for a run. All four of them are now staring at me wimpering. When the running shoes come out they will just lose it. Too bad I am going to the gym because it is 100 degrees here, so no run for them.

  • I am sticking my nose entirely where it doesn't belong but don't sell yourselves short!  I am not a runner either and ran a half marathon last year.  I was pretty sure that I would die but I didn't.  You will be surprised at how easy it will get for you.  Just concentrate on one mile at a time.  I also recommend the run/walk method as suggested by TJ (I think).  I am going to be using that for my *gulp* marathon in October.Congratulations on the weight loss.  That is all kinds of awesome!  Also, there is a lot of support and running advice over on the GIS board.  There are some crazies there too, but I guess that is true here as well.Anyway, I am going to "c" myself out of this conversation.  Good luck to all of you planning on your first 5k!

  • Yes, congratulations cacoffer! That is wonderful. Just be consistent on the running and you will work up to it in no time. I can't run much because of bad joints but I was surprised at how quickly I was able to do 2 miles. Although I never made it over that:)

  • The bike isn't too much of a workout - it's all flat here and I don't go very fast - but I put on so much weight due to a bad situation I was in over the last year, and I'm so sedentary in general that I'll really benefit, at least for a while, from any kind of activity at all. I've lost about 7 lbs on WW so far, and for 3 weeks, I'm definitely pleased (though the first week was just a substantial water weight drop). I'm trying to lose around 5 pounds a month until dress fitting time. I think it's pretty reasonable. And I know it sounds all kumbaya, come hold my hand around the camp fire, but I do enjoy knowing there are people working on the same thing.

Dont sell yourself short on the bike - its great work out for your legs (gives you a great burn) and if you have any good trails there you can build up speed and really push yourself. I only do cardio on a stationary bike and spinning classes and have had great success so far.
  • I'm also butting in, but I just wanted to say congratulations cacoffer and hang in there! Nugget, go for it!  I have another friend who is doing this as well and it has been tough, but I'm so proud of her.  Having a real goal like this is helpful.
