Photography frustrations

Grrr. The fiancee and I were supposed to go take our engagement session photos yesterday. We had made arrangements with the photographer to meet him in Balboa Park at 12 pm. We get all dressed up, we get in the car, drive from Santee to Balboa Park, and wait at our designated meeting place until 12:45. I finally put a call in to him, and get his voice mail, where I leave him a message what's going on. I tell him we're going to be there until 1 pm, and would like a phone call or something to let us know what's going on. 1 pm comes & goes; we leave and go out to eat, then back home. I then tried sending an email to him asking what happened, state that this incident is not building our confidence in him, and that it seems we will need to reschedule for when I can get a weekend day off. It's now 2:45 pm on Monday, and I STILL haven't heard from the photographer. No email, no phone call to say that he forgot, or a call from his wife/assistant to say that he was in an accident or anything...I'm really kind of angry about this, and I'm beginning to think that if I don't hear anything more from him by the end of the week that I will be sending an email, placing a call, and sending a registered letter stating I wish a refund of the deposit and that I am terminating the contract due to him not being able to fulfill his end.Am I out of line for being angry over the fact that I still haven't yet received any notification from him as to why he never showed? I would hope that I would get a phone call, or an email, or SOMETHING apologizing for missing our appointment, but I haven't heard anything from him yet. I don't know if this is a bad sign for me or not...

OMG - I'd be totally upset too!  How extremely unprofessional.  I hope you hear from him soon.

You are not out of line.  That is completely unprofessional. On this day and age when we all carry cell phones and blackberries there is no excuse for him to not keep you in the loop should there be a change in appointment times.  Who is he so we don't use him?  Good luck and hang in there!

4:35pm and still no response. Fiancee said that the last time we heard from him was on Tues. of last week, when he confirmed by email our engagement photo session. She wants to wait until the end of the week to see if we hear anything from him (who knows, maybe he had a death in the family, or maybe he's laid up in the hospital). If we don't at that point, we'll send a registered letter to him, along with an email and a phone call, stating that we are terminating our services with him and are requesting a refund of our deposit, as he hasn't done anything but take our money.I'll also be contacting the San Diego Bridal Bazaar to let them know that he is dropping the ball with us, since we first found out about him at the January Bazaar at the convention center.

I agree... please give us his name so we don't book him!

Sorry to hear that, what a shame! I just found this couple of photographers that look like good and fun photographers AND their package starts at $800 if you are in the market again. Unfortunately they are booked my date, but I'll pass off their name to you to contact: The Sprouting Image -www.bestsandiegowedding.com (I can't vouch for them, just an internet find that seems promising)

I totally understand your frustration. It's going on 48 hours now and I would think you should have heard something by now. Especially since his wife is his assistant. There are a lot of affordable and good photographers out there right now. I am sure you will find one. If it helps we are using Ann Sumi Photography. www.annsumiphotography.com and have already done our engagement session and liked them!Keep us posted though...we would love to hear how this all plays out.

I'm a Knottie from last year, but I lurk every once in a while and couldn't not post back to you on this.I would suggest calling him again and leaving a message stating that you will call every hour, on the hour, at every hour of the day, until you receive a call back. At that point, I would terminate your contract with them and request your $$$ back.A And send that letter already! You and your FI do not need to be dealing with this. Wedding planning, taking your epics, and all the stuff that comes during your engagement is supposed to be fun. It's not supposed to be this frustrating. Good luck with finding resolution.

First, terminate his contract with you. I can't believe your fiancé wants to wait. He took your money, and didn't show up. He'll do it on your wedding day, too. Here are two photographers in your price range: Alexandra Oat. Alexoat.com. She was my photog. for my wedding, and we love our pictures. Also try Stephinaphotography.com. I've seen their work, and they have a great positive energy, and are very well liked on another forum. If that guy ever does contact you, please don't agree to keep him as your photog. He has already shown you who he is.

Well, I sent a certified letter to the photographer today, terminating our contract. Here's what I put: Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 st1\:*{behavior:url(#ieooui) } /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman";} To Whom it May Concern: Please consider this our notice to terminate the contract between Calvin Evans and Alicia Randolph & Doug Abel.  On August 3, 2009, the undersigned corresponded via email to confirm that the date of August 9, 2009, was available for an engagement photo session. Calvin Evans responded back on the 4th of August stating that this date was available and that he would be meeting us in front of the Rueben H. Fleet Science Center. Alicia and Doug waited until 12:47 pm, placed a call to the contact telephone number of (619) 253-4245 attempting to reach Calvin, They reached voicemail and left a message, providing a cell phone number where they could be reached. At 1 pm, Calvin still had not made an appearance, and the aforementioned couple left. On Aug. 9th, at 2:36 pm, an email document was sent to calvinevans_98@yahoo.com stating the possible rescheduling of the engagement portrait session. On Wed, Aug. 11, a phone call was placed to (619) 253-4245 at 4:06 pm, again attempting to reach Calvin. Another voicemail was left, and as of the writing of this letter no contact had yet been made to Doug Abel or Alicia Randolph, either via phone or email. Due to the lack of communication and the lack of services rendered, the undersigned are terminating the contract for an engagement photo session and subsequent wedding photo session, and are seeking a full refund of the $250 deposit paid on January 26, 2009.I then provided our contact info, signed it, and mailed off a copy of the document to him, using a return receipt via the USPS. That way, I'll know that he received it, and if/when I have to take him to small claims court to recover my fees, I'll have more ammo to fire away with. Now comes finding photographers who are 1) in our price range, 2) available for the date we need, and 3) are what we want. :)

That's really great you did that. I've been watching your thread to see what happened! Seriously, contact Alexandra Oat. Her pictures from my wedding were beautiful. I know when I booked her last year she had a photography package around $800. I went on the website for your "old" photographer--and there will be lots more photogs in your price range that take better pictures. If you want to see pics from my wedding, just send me your email and I'll send some to you. Or just go onto her site. alexoat.com
