  We lived together for 3 years before we got married, and we'd both been on our own for 10 years.  I still found plenty of stuff that we wanted/needed.  We upgraded our sheets/towels, we got better (matching) silverware, lots of glassware/barware, and some specialty appliances (ice cream maker, fondue set, etc).

  We've been living together for two. I would think of all the things that you want upgraded, or things you know that will wear over time. We registered for king sheets even though we still have a queen bed because we are planning for that after the wedding. We also registered for some new pans as backups for when ours wear. We also purchased a lot of specialty kitchen supplies that we never got around to buying.

  You can always register at amazon for all types of things, or at REI for outdoor stuff.

  we are registering for upgraded versions of things we have already, most of our stuff is about on its last leg and so we are hoping to get things that will last us for a while. hth

  I agree on finding things to upgrade.  If you have only a smallish-registry, many guests may choose to give you cash instead, but at least you aren't asking for cash specifically which many consider tacky.If you don't want gifts or cash I think it's wonderful when couples ask for guests to donate to a charity of the couple's choice in lieu of gifts.

  If you are planning on going on a honeymoon, there are honeymoon registries where you can share what you plan to do on your honeymoon with you guests and set $ denominations so they can contribute to your trip.

  Yes, but a lot of people find honeymoon registries really rude, so be careful if you go that route.

  We've lived together for two years and we registered for upgrades- new towels, new and bigger sheets, new everyday dishes, MATCHING silverware and server ware, etc. I am so excited to have new and matching silverware! LOL

  My friend sent out a note saying they had everything they needed and weren't looking for gifts but as so many people were asking, if anyone really wanted to buy them a gift they would really appreciate B&Q (UK home depot equivalent) vouchers so they could do the work to the house (baby room) they were planning.She worded it so nicely everyone followed their wishes and they didn't end up with loads of stuff they already had.

  Specialty cook ware is always good.  Garlic press, spring form pans, pastry supplies.You can always get new pillows and sheets.  If you don't need them now store them until it is time to retire the old.We've lived on our own for quite some time and together for almost ten months now.  I registered for gardening tools, new door mats, some nice cooking supplies I've been meaning to get, a snow shovel, more pillow cases, and the like.

  What about nontraditional registries? REI, Amazon, honeymoon, charity, home depot, or some fun local shop? We were in a similar boat and upgraded some stuff, same as PP, but we VERY excited to register for nice pans, knives and a furminator (we have two very fluffy dogs and it was on the list from Bed bath and beyond. ha!)
