Anyone do anything for Lent?

I know we have different religions across our board but I'm Catholic and Ash Wednesday is this week so Lent begins. Anyone giving anything up? Not sure what I will. I want to try soda but have a bunch of coke in the fridge and pantry Undecided haha

[QUOTE]I was Catholic growing up too, so I always gave something up.  My sister still is and I think it was her Freshman or Sophomore year of college that she gave up soda so it was super hard with the college pressures but she went to a Jesuit College and it was pretty much expected.  The whole idea is to give up something that is super hard because it makes you reflect on what Jesus gave up for you.

Yeah...I transferred my junior year of HS to a public school so that's why I haven't done anything lately. It's just not in the front of my mind like it was
  • We'll be going to church on Ash Wednesday. I also really want to give up dessert, but we still need to figure out our cake. I still might give it up and have a "buy just for those occasions since it's a special circumstance. I think it's all about your commitment to it. I've given up soda, chocolate, and fried foods in the past. It's not that hard if you put your mind to it, and really, how big of a deal is it to sacrifice something for 40 days in the name of Jesus? I've also tried to do something to better myself in the past. Like give someone a compliment every day.

I'm giving up soda and chocolate. They're my two go-to splurges. FI is giving up alcohol.

  • I gave up soda one year and now I really don't drink it! I'll maybe have one once every couple of months now.

I think I'm going to give up not going to the gym, if that works. I need to stop saying and start doing!  Also just limit my sweets. I love my chocolate chip cookies!

  • In college, I started giving up something really big and adding some extra service work to my week.  I've given up soda, caffeine (so hard in college!), and my senior year, I have up all bread.  I was probably addicted to bagels, so that was hard!

  • I'm not Catholic but during Lent last year I gave up sweets. It wasn't for Lent but the timeframe of Lent helped me stick to it. I will do it again this year. I felt so much better about myself when I had accomplished that!

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Anyone do anything for Lent? : I don't know if I can do it haha. I may do something like go to the gym at least 3 times a week because I've really been trying to do that. Going to Catholic school, I always gave something up but the past 2 years I haven't so was thinking about doing it this year

We are not Catholic but I loved doing this when I was studying French. So, though I am not Catholic I will probably drop sweets. It's gonna suck. Cookies for me are like soda for most people since I don't drink soda and never have.

  • I dont think we will be giving anything up.... however, we have been talking about breaking down one of the gospels into 40 days of reading and FI and I reading a section together every night. We are also going to start the tradition of watching "The Passion of the Christ" every Good Friday. When Carter gets older and future kids get older they will watch it too. I think that movie is a great reminder of what Jesus went through for us. I cry during the whole movie, but I love to watch it.

I'm the same way! I've never liked it.  I don't like the bubbles.  I'll rarely enjoy the occasional orange soda, but that's like once a year rarely

  • I always forget about the meat thing. It would be easy at Catholic school because it'd be fish or something on the menu but not living at home or going to Catholic school, I failed miserably last year. I'm gonna try to cut back soda (it's getting really bad like one everyday) to one a week and go to the gym 3 times a week. I really want to tone up and be healthier. I walked 5.5 miles one week of going to the gym and using a treadmill and lost 4 lbs. Then I skipped last week boo haha

The point of giving something up for lent isnt for personal gains..... if you want to give these things up for yourself then that is great- but you shouldnt say you are giving it up for lent then.

Well I mean it would be hard for me and that's the point of giving something up for lent. I was just saying it'd also be a benefit for me in addition to it being hard.

  • I'm also catholic and i always try to give something up. Last year i did soda and it worked great for me ....i have to tell you tho, is was really hard for me because i love soda...

This year I probably give up meat, i know we are not allow to eat it on fridays but i think im given it up for the 40 days. i love meat and with the wedding being so close it would also help me loose weight faster and it would also be a sacrifies ....we will see

    I agree with Zimsgirl

  • Hmm...I'm not Catholic either, but my family members often give up something for Lent. I've given up chocolate, tetris (I was a bit of an addict!), and even FB one year (that was so hard!) My family gave up meat for one Lent but now they're all pretty much vegetarian. I've been a strict vegetarian for two years now. My mom is talking about giving up wine this year. I'm still trying to decide...
  • I always do meatless Fridays (although every once in a while I slip up and forget--usually at breakfast time!). I will admit, I haven't given anything up in the last few years. I might this year, but I'm not sure what it will be. I'll have to think about it. My mom gives up sweets and salty snacks every year.

FI and I are Christian and we both participate in Lent as it is a real physical reminder of the sacrifice Christ made for us, even if we only feel a little discomfort.

I suppose we'll probably "give-up" the same thing and I'll encourage meatless Fridays (I'm actually attempting a very loose vegetarian diet, with fish, and some chicken sometimes).

I also really like the idea of adding a service to this time period. Such as no negative comments to FI for 40 days (and forever! wouldn't that be nice...) or give 5 people compliments each day (if I see that many....). Also making sure I'm doing my devotions everyday, it's one page a day, I can do that.

  • I am Catholic and usually don't give up anything, but adhere to the no meat on Fridays rule. There is usually one Friday that I forget and feel terrible. I'll be attending church on Wednesday night for Ash Wednesday and will also not have meat on Wednesday.

The worst was the year I gave up dairy products... OMG that sucked, I couldn't have anything. I am a dairy queen I love my milk and cheese so that was very hard for me that year.
