Reserving a block of rooms...

I'm inviting several out of town guests (including FI's immediate family) and will need to reserve a block of rooms. How far in advance do I need to do this? Is there a down payment required? Those of you who also have done this, who did you go with or who do you recommend? My wedding is at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton church in Bear and the reception is at Executive Banquets in Newark/Glasgow, so I'm looking more towards the Newark area. TIA!

I cant really give recs for your area, Im not too familiar...  But I can answer some of your other questions...  As far as when, if you are sending STD's, you should have that info in them.  The earliest most places will let you book is 1 year in advance.  I scoped out the area, decided which hotels to use then had to call back for prices & contracts 1 year before. Usually, there is no payment  required...  I did not have to pay for either of my blocks (Christiana Hilton or Red Roof Inn across the street) nor did I have to garentee a certain # of rooms.  If that area is ok, I would rec either of them, they have both been great.

Umm though a bit farther, there are the cluster of 3 by the Bob Carpenter center. Hilton hotel, embassy suites, and sleep inn. I really liked UD's Marriott hotel. The only other close one I can think of is that hotel by the mall on old baltimore pike and 273.

I think another question that needs to be asked is are you having a shuttle of some kind?  That may play into your decisions as well.  If you have a shuttle, you may be able to expand your area, and look into Wilmington as well.We will probably end up looking at the UD Marriott- I have heard good things about both of them.  There is also a Marriott and a Fairfield Inn by Toys-r-us, along with Hilton, Quality Inn, Days Inn, Red Roof Inn, Country Inn and Suites, and some others on the other side of the highway. In Newark itself, you have Embassy Suites, Homewood Suites by Hilton, Howard Johnson, and a bunch of others. It all depends on what you want.  If you want to just be able to provide your guests with rooms, most of these are fine.  If you want to provide your guests with a nice experience as well as a room, I would suggest either the Hilton, Courtyard Marriott, or looking into Wilmington (which has Doubletree and Sherton).

Thanks, everyone! I think the shuttle factor will play a key role in my decision. I really appreciate everyone's suggestions!
