Maui or Costa Rica?

I was wondering if anyone has ever been to either of these resorts: Allegro Papagayo resort in Costa Rica or Aston Maui Kaanapali resort in Maui??? My travel agent gave me prices to both of these resorts and I was hoping to get someones personal opinion on one or both of them. If you've ever been to one or know someone who has I would love to hear about it! Thank you!

Re: Maui or Costa Rica?

  • I don't know anything specifically about those two resoirts, but if you want to see my review of our Maui honeymoon, it's in my bio link below.   There's pics in the Wedding Photos area and then my review in Vendor Reviews area.  We stayed in Kaanapali, so I thought maybe my review might help you.
  • As pp said I did not stay at either location, but did get back from my honeymoon in Costa Rica last week and we loved it. We got a lot for our money and there is tons to do since the country's landscape is so diverse, that's what really sold us on it. If you just want to sit at the beach and with airfare Maui is cheaper go there, but if you want to explore, have a few adventures and relax I would recommend CR! Good luck.
  • Just returned from costa rica and fell in love with this country. it is an absolutley amazing place - however, i reccomend not going to only stay at a resort and only see one part of CR - there is so much to do with areas 2 - 3 hours apart from each other offering so much!you should look on trip advisor forums to get input, you can also read my blog that is in my siggy.we went to St.Lucia for our HM 2 years ago and stayed at sandals - the airfare anf 8 days there costed us $6100 - this not include any costs for excursions, souveniors etc. CR for 10 days cost us under $4k - bang for your buck
  • We were debating between Hawaii and CR and I am happy that we chose CR because it seems like a one of a kind place, not your typical cliche honeymoon spot-although becoming a popular one! I had already been to Hawaii-not Maui but Oahu, which is amazing-and FI wanted something different, not as commercialized, not just laying out at a pool like we can do at any point, even once we have family. We keep hearing great things from people we know about CR too. We are staying at the Hilton Papagayo but are renting a car so we can do some exploring. Good luck!

  • I don't want to sound like I'm trying to persuade you to do Hawaii (Costa Rica sounds pretty sweet), but I wanted to address the comments about just laying out at the pool or beach.  Maui had a lot to offer in terms of activities.  We did a zipline tour, horseback riding, you can snorkel, ATV.  There's really a lot more to do than just laying around and relaxing.
  • I wanted to thank everyone for your input! I think I've decided to go with Maui since we can get a lot more for the money, condo, car, activities, etc. Thank you for helping me decide! :)
  • I'm sure either one would be amazing.  Enjoy your honeymoon!
  • Although I am not familiar with those particular resorts, I have been to both Maui and Costa Rica several times. Both are beautiful but very different. CR will be MANY times cheaper but it is a bit more rugged. (You are technically in a 3rd world country.) CR is quicker and easier to get to. I think that CR is what Maui used to look like before it was developed. Feel free to ask any specific questions if you have them! I think that both are amazing!
