Name Change?

I bet this has been posted before but I never paid attention/don't remember. When you go to change your name at the SSN office and with the DMV, can you use a certified copy of the marriage certificate or do you need to wait for the original to come back?I'm hoping I can just use the certified copy that we'll get when we turn it back in next week so that I can spend one afternoon doing that as well as getting on FI's insurance a day before the cutoff to replace the stupid student insurance that I don't want (crazy CO requiring grad students to be insured!). It will make for a long day but I'd rather get it all done and not have to worry about it later. Thanks!

Our official copy was in our mailbox before we returned from the honeymoon.. so less than one week.

I just used a certified copy for everything and had no problem with that.

Have any of your FI/DH changed their names? The lady at the county clerks office has said she has met a number of men looking to change their names but was unsure whether the SS office and DMV took the certificate, as they do for women, or if he would have to go to court. Any thoughts or experience? Thank you!

I need to know about about the FI name change too. We are hyphenating are last names, so we are both changing it. And I have no idea on if he gets to do the same thing as a women or he has to go to the courts.

A man has to go to court and do an official name change.  The forms are available online.  Ladies need to go to both DMV and SS, but in any order - doesn't matter which you do first.  I went to DMV and got my 'new' temporary license, and you keep your old one (they punch a hole in it, but you will still have it to show the before and after name).

Thanks, gals! I was hoping I wouldn't have to wait for the original back!I've also heard that guys have to petition the court to change their name or something like that. Doesn't really seem right that we have it so easy and they have to jump through hoops.
