NWR: Dog has rash on genital area

Ladies-so the other day my husband noticed our dog had a bug near his wee wee (a little bug) we couldn't get it off by hand because he got mad and started biting, so we put him in the sink and used the handheld sprayer thing to wash it away and it worked. It looked like a fruit fly.Even before we saw the bug, he was itching his back leg, wee wee area. The area is a bit red but not crazy red, more like pink actually. He does this weird thing where he will suddenly hop and spin in a circle and bite/lick near his tail or his genitals. We called the animal ER and gave him 1/3 of a benadryl and he is sleepy now.Basically the spinning in circles and hopping thing is weird, but I googled it i looks like it could be a hot spot. He has had his anal glands done recently so I don't think it's that.any thoughts?

  • I hate the word "wee wee" (if it's even a word). I'm sorry, I have no advice about the rash. I would imagine the benedryl will help.
  • Uh...TMI?Sorry, I got nothing.
  • Im sorry that Beefy gave your doggie the herp:(

  • no worms...hes 5...he just saw the vet maybe a month ago...how would I know if he had worms? I am going to google to see. He is on flea/heartworm medicine and is never around other dogs (literally, never he hates other dogs)

  • Maybe it's just a bug bite. I know it's weird (and probably not the easiest to do), but can you try getting some of the Benadryl cream and putting it on? When my cat got stung by a wasp, that's what the vet recommended.
  • i gave him benadry orally but will try the creamit could be a bug bitehe did have a skin infection over a month ago from a mat he had in his fur (we have to have him put under for grooming because he is scared and gets aggressive, so we cant always brush each mat out)

  • Pinworms is what I was thinking of.  Its a parasite that gets in their pooper, and makes it itchy.  Its not dangerous, but annoying...or so Dr. Oz told me.

  • btw he took antibiotics for the skin infection and it is completely gone.

  • Are you sure it was a fruit fly and not a tick? I would definatly follow up with your vet. If you broke the tick off at the head, it could be lodged and that could make him itch.
  • i am almost positive it was not a tick i looked up pics and I don't remember the thing having legs like a tick does. We didnt really have to pull it off, the power of the water spray just washed it away.we didnt take him to any wooded areas or anything...hmmm...will have to wait and see if this persisits and then go from there.thanks ladies :)he is mostly itching in his butt area and is kind of spinning and hopping around (but only occasionally) so we are monitoring that.

  • On most ticks I've seen you can't even see the legs unless you're up really close, and trust me they can get anywhere, not just wooded areas :)I'm not much help though other than I've seen a lot of ticks.

  • hmmmwe will take him to the vet this week if he continues to be weird. and you're right, it could be a tick.IF it was a tick and we broke it off...is that a good thing?  it didnt seem to be attached to his skin, more like just hanging out in the fur but who knows.

  • It's not a good thing if the head is still in the dog, which happens more than you would think, but if it washed off with water hopefully it wasn't all the way attached and so the head shouldn't be in there, hopefully it's just a bite (if that's the case he'll be fine in a day or so).

  • What kind of dog do you have? I think it kind of sounds like a tick, except that it probably wouldn't have come off with just water. I'd just keep an eye on him. We call my boy dog's "wee wee" his "winkie". Makes it sound silly instead of gross, I don't want to think of my baby as having male genetalia ; )

  • There's this stuff called Benadene that you can get for hot spots.  It's a blue gel.  I bought mine from the grocery store.  It's supposed to soothe the area.
  • I have a rash on my genitals too. I am telling you this so you can tell your dog and it will make him feel better. Empathy is a powerful thing.I'm pretty sure mine is just a yeast infection. So FUN. I went to shoot up one of those stupid Monostat tablet things and I dropped it in the toilet. Damn. Broke open another one, cause damnnnn if I'm going to get more ill stuff up me. But now I have to buy a whole other pack cause I'm pretty sure they don't sell refills for that sh1t.random, I know. But I felt like sharing.
  • If it was a tick, I seriously doubt you could've washed it off with water unless it just got on him.  When my dog had one on him I had to yank that thing out with tweezers.  Totally gross.  And trust me when I say he doesn't need to go in a wooded area to get them- my dog has picked them up before just in our backyard, and there are no woods around.  If you really think it might've been a tick you could try putting a little rubbing alcohol on the bite area, but if his skin is irritated it will sting.  If a head is in there it'll work its way out. Hopefully the benadryl will help with the itching.  If you think he might be developing a hot spot I would take him to the vet.  They can get nasty if you let it go for too long.  Good luck with him- hope he's feeling better!
  • Sounds like fleas to me.  If he's getting bitten by fleas, that would explain the sudden hopping and spinning.  Have you used Frontline or anything on him recently?  If not, I'd suggest doing it ASAP!  Also, if he has a flea allergy, that would explain the rash/redness around the area where you saw a "bug" which could certainly have been a flea.
  • It might be fleas. Some dogs actually have an allergy to them, not just get bites. If it's a hot spot they usually come from being damp. Like if your dog has long hair, and gets wet(wet grass or bath) and isn't dried completely. The wet enviornment allows yeast/bacteria to grow and the dogs lick and itch at it to cause an infection. You should take your dog to the vet if it persists. (my mom is a dog groomer thats why I know about the hotspots)
  • What type of dog do you have?? My bulldog does what you are describing but she gets a heat rash on her belly and because of the size of her and the type of dog she is also gets an inflamed genital area, my vet just told me to clean the area and gave me a cream to apply. I would speak with you vet.
