Gym Vent (Long)

So if TK sorted properly, I'd just add this vent to yesterday's thread but alas it doesn't.

FI and I went to the gym we joined earlier this month for a free health assessment/workout session last night. Pretty awesome thing for them to offer if you ask me and we were excited to learn exactly what would benefit each of us (especially FI since he wants to lose some weight before the wedding).

The personal trainer we were with was really nice throughout talking to us about a typical day, our goals, and even through the workout. He kinda kicked our butt too, in a good way. Found out I can't even lift a 15lb weight with both hands for any extended period of time too. I digress.

We get finished with this 15 minute workout session and he takes us back downstairs to talk about stuff. Suddenly, the nice PT that we had been with for the last 45 minutes evaporated and this jerk replaced him (same person). He suggests that we both get a PT to help us reach our goals quicker and more effeciently. We politely tell him we can't afford that right now and apparently that's not good enough.

He starts badgering us with ways we could afford the PT and why we have to have one. "Use the money you use on Fast Food! The workout I showed you will be ineffective in 2 days! I'm not stupid, I know what I'm talking about! (Well guess what, neither are we and one of my BFFs lost a ton of weight without even going to a gym!)" He even asked Matt after I said we can't afford it if he works, as if I am some biitch who dictates where he can spend his money. Sorry, we're adults with joint money and we make financial decisions together, neither of us dictates what can and cannot be spent on something.

Matt tries to politely (thank goodness because I was fuming) tell him that all money we save by not eating out or whatever else is going towards our wedding no ifs and or buts about it. That's the way is has to be and last time I checked, the PT didn't have access to my bank account.

Well I couldn't hold it in anymore so I finally spoke up and informed him that he didn't know our financial situation and we literally can't afford it right now. We go over budget almost every month as it is, so there is none of this magical extra money to put towards a PT. We're trying not to use credit cards and haven't in MONTHS. I'm not going to start because some egotisical jerk thinks we have to have a PT. Sorry dude. I even said "This isn't the wedding budget I'm talking about because we can cut stuff out of that if needed" (so no Bridezilla here).

Then the PT tries to tell me there's no need to get upset. Which only made me more mad. I really can't stand it when people forcefully try to tell you how to spend your money.

Then, even though we've told the PT the same thing over and over again, suddenly changing one word made everything okay. Matt said "We are choosing to save all of our money towards the wedding" and the PT was fine with that. Really dude? THAT'S WHAT WE'VE BEEN SAYING THE WHOLE TIME!

I really want to write a letter to corporate because Matt said a different PT tried to do the same thing to him when he first joined (about a week before I did). That's just ridiculous, rude and no way to treat your PAYING members.

If you read all of that, I applaud you and you rock. <3
If you didn't, the CN is that the PT tried and tried again to get us to pay for personal training by badgering us and basically telling us that if we didn't do this that we didn't care about our health. He was a jerk and I want to write a letter to corporate.

Re: Gym Vent (Long)

  • I would write a letter to corporate. He had no right to act that way. I would have been pissed too.

  • Go Midgie! I'm so proud of you for standing up to that dickwad.  And I would definitely write a letter to corporate.  Hopefully you hvae the names of those trainers too.  When we joined our gym we both just declined the free "consult" because we knew that we'd be more or less bullied into getting a trainer and we didn't want that.
  • I am very impressed that I read that entire thing, but then again you have a way with writing to actually make it enjoyable and interesting!

Definitely write a letter.  Gym people can be JERKS.  When I got my membership, the guy tried to tell me my coupon wouldn't work for the lowest plan they had...so I said I nevermind I don't need a membership...and then he said he would make an "exception" for me.  Yeah right.  They are all scam artists who want your moniesssss.
Good for you for standing up for yourselves!

  • I would defianlty wirte letter. I would have been so mad, and I know I wouldn't have been a nice as you and your FI were about it!
  • Thanks everyone, I'm glad I make it enjoyable to read that huge vent. I used to be pushed around a lot (my ex is a perfect example) but no more!

I'll talk to FI about us writing a letter to corporate. I don't even think I mentioned that desire to him yet (oops). I'm sure he'll agree anyway. I've got a journalist on my side! :)
  • Ugh! That is so annoying. Some people are so rude. I understand that he needs to "sell his product". But if you say no in such a clear way, then the discussion should be over. Sorry you  had to put up with that!!

  • I definitely think if you can afford it, maybe once a month or every other month try and get a PT to see where you are at and change you training plan. IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT.  The gym offers all kinds of things that are included, like classes and trainers. Try to go to some of these classes, like spin and stuff, because they are pretty fun, and it can be hard to figure out what to do everyday.

You do not need a PT. That guy was just trying to make money, which I HATE! I would definitely write a letter.  And who knows? Maybe they will through a few free sessions in for the trouble they caused you. Just request someone else ;)

That is seriously a brilliant idea. He gets to write a piece about whatever he wants every month or so.

Meg, I totally agree with you if you can afford one! lol I told FI to get a hold of my friend who lost all that weight without going to the gym (he has some of his own stuff), take him to our gym with one of those free guest passes and have him show you what he did.

When I told the PT about that friend of ours, he was like "people don't lose weight the same way". Thank you captain obvious, but the only way to find out is to try right? My guess is that it would work for FI too though because our friend had most of his weight in the same place FI does.
  • Oh, and the cheapest they offer at the gym is a weekly price. You can't even buy one time sessions from them.
  • Ugh. How annoying! I hate when anyone does that to me. Like the people in the mall who try to sell you stuff and you tell them no twenty times. I get pissed fairly quickly because of it. You handled it very well though Midge! I'd be writing a letter for sure. I understand they want/need to sell the product but they need to respect the customer as well.

This.  I honestly doubt corporate would do anything.  However, telling others on yelp or other sites I think will be much more effective in the long run.

<div>Wow.  I bet they are losing a lot of money this way.</div>
  • Yea...I'm never going to something like that without FI ever again. I super got conned into doing that at my old gym. They would not even give me my membership card without me signing up for one session a week. They wouldn't let me stop without paying HALF of whatever time was left...but the worst part? My trainer kept cancelling my session and would never schedule one with me, so they pretty much got over $1,000 from me for NOTHING. I hate them...Gold's Gym, now Fitness Connection.

That's why I now go to the nice, friendly, YMCA.
  • Oh my gosh Kelsey, that's horrible. I probably would have sued them. Ours is Urban Active.

That surprisese me. We go to Golds and we LOVE them.  We just did the flat membership fee of $10/mo which means no training and no classes( which is fine by us).  They were really cool about it.

    Ugh! :(
  • I had a free session when I first signed up for the gym. The PT spent most of his time texting on his cell phone. Then at the end was so pushy trying to get me to sign up for sessions. I flat out told him that I would never sign up with him because he was constantly on his phone. It was really annoying.

  • Wow, that really stinks! I think it's ridiculous when employees of any company/store/etc. make you feel like you HAVE to buy something, or tell you what to do. Instead of making people want to come train with him (or in other cases when workers in stores try to push you to try stuff on/buy something ) it makes me NOT want to do it at all, even if I did to begin with.

  • Good for you Midge!  That's absolutely ridiculous the way they conduct their business and I probably would write a letter if I were you.  I'm seriously happy that you spoke up to them, you probably said a lot of things other people had always been afraid to say.

Kelsey we had trouble with our Gold's too and just sucked up the money and stopped going.  We go to Planet Fitness now which is nice because no one badgers me for anything ever and at the end of 2011 they ran a special for $99 for a one year contract with no annual fee.

That is SO uncalled for!  I agree with the PP who mentioned that your FI should write an opinion/editorial; that's just horrible.  The "fast food budget" comment is just insulting; not only does he not have access to your bank account, he doesn't know your spending or eating habits.  Cutting out your once-per-month McDonalds run isn't going to pay for a personal trainer.

One of FI's old coworkers had trouble with a Gold's gym too, way back when.  Long story short, he and his wife weren't very good with budgeting in their early years, and were still dealing with the repercussions now that they were more responsible.  Golds called them up and tried to threaten their credit score from a gym membership from 10 years prior, telling them that they'd knock it down X amount every N days.  Luckily they knew their rights, and the laws regarding credit score hits, and not only was their threat not possible, they were past their statute of limitations to do this in the first place!

  • This is the main reason I put off joining a gym for so long!  They get you in there (in my case, a free lesson) and then start badgering you and trying to make you feel bad because you don't want to join or add services right then and there.  I HATE THIS PRESSURE TACTIC!!  Don't they realize it is a massive turn-off?
  • Good for you standing up for yourself. I recently joined 24hr fitness cause they always have a zumba class, and I love zumba it turns out. When I went in to see if I liked the place with a friend they tried to tell me I couldn't do anything without giving them all this info and talking with a sales person. I said no then I'm good thanks anyhow. The manager came up and glared at the salesman and said go ahead and walk through, if you have questions feel free to ask. When I came back to the front to leave he said he was sorry about the one guy and that no one would both me again. Guess what I signed up and I'm loving it.
I would have been tempted to kick the pt in the shins if he tried that on me. I would have said your not really worth spending my money on. Or at least in my head I would have said that. Tongue out
  • I would have been super mad.  Sounds like you handled yourself well.  I would have exploded!
