Is any brand of soy sauce gluten-free?  If so, do you recommend any particular GF pasta?  If not, what dish would you take to a birthday picnic that can be made ahead and will be ok outside for a while?

  • Tamari is gluten free, and I love it.  I take a little bottle with me to Asian restaurants.  It's a little thicker and stronger than, say, Kikkoman but I've used it in recipes with no changes and it worked just fine. There are a ton of great GF pasta options available.  I usually keep De Boles (I think that's the speling, blue box) on hand, but I buy whatever's on sale.  Anything made with corn or rice is going to be the easiest to work with, and the closest texture to regular pasta.  Quinoa is good, but it has a very definitive taste and texture that takes some getting used to. My best pasta advice is to cook it al dente and be prepared for some extra cleanup.  The starch from rice and corn pasta is a biitch to clean.

  • Tamari is the brand?  Can I get this at WF?

  • Tamari is the brand name.  I got mine at WF but I've seen it at other stores too.  WF is probably your best bet, but you could likely get it at any store with a good Asian food section.

  • You're welcome!  I may have said this before, but I think you're a really great friend for making an effort to make things your friend can eat.

  • Aw, thanks.  This is her birthday, so it would be really crappy not to.  I'm better at cooking for her one on one (it's easy to do a great meat and veggies dish) than making dishes for a large group where I tend toward things like bruschetta and sausage balls.

  • What are you making?
  • I think I'm doing the Pioneer Woman's Asian Salad with GF soy sauce and pasta.

  • I think that is a perfect picnic item.  I love rice noodles, almost more than pasta.
  • check out www.glutenfreeveganct.com..lots of great gluten free product reviews and the soy sauce is on there too! the brand is SAN J and you can get it at whole foods for sure. i have also seen it at stop and shop! there is a regular version and a lower sodium version.  also, for the pasta, SCHAR makes the best tasting, most real texture GF pasta. It is a lil expensive, but worth it! also, tinkyada makes a great tri-color spiral pasta that i use for pasta salad, which is great cold! there is a recipe for that ont he site as well!lemme know if this helps! :O)
