First Time at DB!

I am so excited! We are having a drink and heading to David's Bridal to figure out what type of dress is "my style" on Monday!!!!! Since there is 4 of us funloving outgoing people going, I want to have a really good consultant. Any recommendations? How is Wendy or Carmen?Any tips for my first time trying on a dress?

Okay, this may not sound the greatest, and I know there are girls on here who used DB and had a great experience, but I am going based off of what I experienced...I went to DB the first time that we went looking at dresses, and it was horrible. I felt like a cookie cutter bride going down the assembly line. We got ditched by our consultant (I can't remember her name), and when we decided at that point to just look at dresses on our own, all of the ones that we looked at (I am a size 20, so in the plus size section) were dirty, torn, or had stains on them. We were so disgusted that we finally just gave up and left.On the contrary, I would HIGHLY recommend Brides and Grooms in Newark. We went there on a Saturday without a reservation (make sure you call ahead and get an appointment if you are going on the weekend, because it's crazy busy in there), and even though it was crowded, they took care of us in a timely manner, and were so polite and excited for me- they even made me feel gorgeous in size 10 sample dresses that obviously won't fit a size 20 bride. They kept telling me I was gourgeous, and they were going to find me an equally beautiful gown, and to stand up straight and be proud of myself, etc etc- maybe it's a buying ploy, but it worked, because I felt so at ease and welcomed there. They were wonderful to order from (give enough time to order, my dress took 6 months to come in), and when we went to pick it up, they all stopped to see me in my dress, once we got it on. I cannot rave about them enough. If you are going on a Monday, I would highly suggest not going to DB and calling B&G and making an appointment there. It's a hole in the wall, but they are so awesome. I also know I am not the only bride here who has had success with them- A bunch of the others went there, and were pleased as well.Hope that helps, let us know what you end up doing!

Oh and one more thing- try on everything. Try on what you want, obvi, but try on what the consultant brings to you and thinks might look good on you. Trust them- they know what they are doing, and they know what looks good on certain body types. I know from experience, because it happened to me- my dress ended up being the one I thought was hideous online, and ugly on the hanger!

I got my dress at DB and didn't have a problem with the consultant getting my dress. She even encouraged me to try on dresses I wasn't necessarily crazy about and one of them ended up being my dress! I did however have a horrible experience with the sales consultant when we went there for my BM's dresses. Luckily all the girls dresses came in right and even came in way early. I think you will be fine going on a Monday and my only recommendation would be to not go on a weekend even with an appointment.

I have to agree with Britney that I did not have the best experience at DB. I would suggest going there to see what you think, but also going to a bridal salon. I purchased my gown at Priscilla of Boston in Wynnewood, PA and had the BEST experience! The girls that worked there were wonderful to me. Each time I walked in the door they remembered who I was and gave me such a warm greeting! I wish every bride could have the same experience I did!I would suggest trying on all types of different gowns. I always thought I wanted a big poofy gown with gloves and went the complete opposite. Also, bring a bra and wear boy shorts so you aren't showing your tush to the sales person helping you:) And most importantly, have fun:)

I didnt shop at DB, (I knew the minute I saw the magazine, I was getting a Alfred Angelo dress) but from what I hear, DB is hit or miss... You can have a great experience (Amber & Donna) or a super crappy experience depending on your sales lady.My dress is from Alfred Angelo in Lancaster, story/review in bio.We got my BM dresses and the tuxes at Brides and Grooms - they were wonderful. Like PP said, dont go on a weekend - its chaos, and a really tiny store. We even waited for a while for a dressing room. Had I known they carried AA dresses, I definately would have went there for my dress. My MOH dress (AA) was cheaper there then at the AA Lancaster store.

Same for me, Steph- my dress was over $100 less at Brides and Grooms than it was at AA.

Just in case you do find a David's dress you like, a big FYI: Da Vinci bridal (who made my dress) do their versions of DB dresses and often you can get them for a bit less (esp. since you can price match at Brides and Grooms to the online competitors). HTH

Both Da Vinci and Impression Bridal do that, Jackie...in fact, the entire bridal industry, as Faith from B&G put it, is nothing but big ol' copy cats! Everyone steals style ideas from everyone else...

I don't have any experience with David's Bridal. But ditto Britt about trying everything on. I've heard so many people say that they hated the dress on the hanger but when they put it on they loved it. GL and have fun!!

The first place I went was DB too. I had a wonderful experience going during the day when they weren't too busy.. I don't remember the consultants name.. she had blonde hair. I tried on EVERY look possible and narrowed it down to 4. I went to another place.. where I found another dress I loved.. but very expensive. I FINALLY found my dress at Forever Formals! If you don't find exactly what you are looking for at DB I would definitely recommend FF. They were EXTREMELY nice and SO helpful.. and their PRICES CAN NOT BE BEAT!! I have had several friends get their dresses at FF and have had nothing bad to say. GOOD LUCK and enjoy the experience! Don't get overwhelmed and stop and go back another time if you need to. Finding your dress is like finding your husband... when you find it YOU WILL KNOW!

hello, so I feel somewhat compelled to comment. I work at DB. lol It's really not back (i got my dress there and am thrilled with it, plus getting commissh off myself was kinda nice lol) So have fun on monday. Try everything on, even if you think you'll hate it. Because when do you ever get to play dress up. In terms of consultants, Wendy is really good. She's nice and kind of "mom"ish. And will take her time with you Be careful with Carmen, she seems sticky sweet, but that woman could sell water to a drowning man. I've seen her talk people into things that they were less than thrilled with. She's only after her commission, be not fooled by anything she says. i mean she'll work for you, but she'll also get you to spend more than you wanted to. Beth and Cindy are also really nice. Cindy is a little blunt (but i've always thought that blunt honesty is best)Sue will rush you.Terri R is also a good one. But I'd also stay away from Cynthia and Terri P. Thay are both nice, but really really slow. Anyway. Hope that helps. I didn't include myself because I'm leaving DB as of Friday for far bigger and better paying things :)Have Fun!!!!

lil-j, I HIGHLY suggest you delete your comment immediately. Wedding vendors of any kind are not allowed to post here, bride to be or no bride to be. The Knot takes a hard stance on any kinds of vendors; they have even banned knotties who did not advertise but other knotties had used them and advertised for them.I would really suggest that you delete the comment, and that you keep any dealings you have in the "wedding world" under wraps, unless you want to be banned. I am not saying this to be mean or harsh, but to let you know so that you aren't banned without knowledge. I don't want to see any other Knotties banned.

Thanks for the advice! I am mainly going there to figure out what the heck I like or what looks good on my shape. And because I ABSOLUTELY LOVE TRYING ON ANY FANCY DRESSES! :) I collect the damn things...I have heard such great stuff about B&G and will probably head there sometime later.Let everyone know how it goes!

Dont forget to jump and dance around it any that you think you like! You will not be a standing statue all day so sit/bend/dance in it to get a feel of what it will feel like that day. :)
