Columbus Athenaeum

I am interested in have my wedding and reception at the Athenaeum.  I have looked over the prices listed online and set an appointment up for Thursday.  Does anyone know that cost of room rental?  Has anyone had a wedding here?  What did you like and or dislike about the venue?

My mom actually contacted the venue and you have to rent a parking lot for parking space.  So just for us - that was out of the question...

You'll get mixed reviews here. Some people love it, some people have hated it. We were turned off by several aspects of the venue, but it does have some gorgeous rooms. As long as you know what you're signing up for, you should be okay, but be prepared for them to nickel and dime you.

I'm looking at that same venue.  When we went in to meet with an event planner there, she gave us a 50% off discount coupon for the reception room.  I think the rooms start at $700 and $900 and can go higher depending on which venue is selected.  My fiancee and I haven't chosen to go with them yet, but it's nice that everything is all in one place there.  It seems like a bit of a wedding factory, but they really know what they are doing.

The costs of room rental depend upon which room you decide to use. I am having my ceremony and reception in the Large Theatre and it was $1000 to rent the room plus a minimum on food. However, as someone mentioned  before they give you a coupon for 50% off of your room rental if you book within 2 weeks so my advice would be to check out other locations first so that if you do decide to book you can do so within 2 weeks and save yourself some cash. I would definitely also advise that you read all of the info that they give you before you book because not everything is included in the room rental and most of the complaints on this board have come from people who did not read carefully and then got upset over unexpected charges. Overall I have found my planner to be super helpful and accomodating and the rooms are so beautiful I could not pass up the chance to get married there!

Freckles.... it's downtown.......a lot of buildings downtown do not have their own lot--as the Athenauem does not. Thus you have to rent a city lot. We had our wedding there, the lot we rented was around $50-150 (I can't recall). That was for about 200 spaces, not far form the venue. Because of the time of day, and the fact we signed the day we viewed, they gave us our reception room for free, it would have been around $250 (small theatre), we used the priory chapel for the ceremony--that was around $700. All of the room prices vary a p/p stated. We had a great wedding day there-- it was great to work with the coordinator-- it makes everything alot easier b/c the catering, linens, and decor are through them. I only used a few of their decor items though, because the rooms were so beautiful on their own I didn't want to distract from that. The only dislike I had was that they had a deposit fee for using a cake vendor that wasn't on their top vendors list. We got the deposit back after the wedding.

50 is the guest minimum, I believe. They have different dinner packages, we had the Ruby Buffet which was around $24 per person, because of the time of day we had our reception we served lunch portions--and that knocked off a couple dollars.Their menus and info is on their website. http://www.columbusmeetings.com/menus.php?PageID=4

My DH's cousin had her wedding and reception there back in May. As a guest I hated the venue. And mainly for the seating. The rows were so teeny and it was so hard to get up into (especially with a toddler) that I almost forwent even watching the service. The reception was nice, but they ushered everyone out into the hallway after the service and we just stood there for 30mins while they finished setting up tables. Then we were allowed back in. But then we were blocked inside while the food was put out on the buffet. And when my daughter had to go pee I tried to get to the bathrooms and had the door shut on my fingers by staff and told I "just had to hold it". The food was fantastic, I will say that, and the wait staff did an excellent job about clearing tables off and getting refills on water. The tables were beautifully decorated but I think that was the bride's mom and not the venue. I also didn't like the stage. While in theory it was a nice idea bc of the cramped seating and the fact that they tried to get everyone as close as possible it made it hard to see.

ditto what everyone said pretty much. Also be aware (which they do tell you) that you have to supply your own alcohol. In addition to that, if you want glasses (vs plastic cups), you have to pay something like $6.95 (4.95 for plastic I think). That's in addition to the alcohol you're purchasing. Most places that I looked at charged close to that for both the glasses and the alcohol. If you have plenty of money, the night of is great.
