Necessary to meet with DJ?

I am currently living in TX, was in MN and met with one DJ who is charges $850 for 8 hours.  I am now looking into Nightlife Entertainment they have a special $695 unlimited time.Do you think I should have my mom and or FI's mom meet with a DJ from Nightlife?  Do you think it is necessary?  Or I could I just talk to them over the phone?

We didn't meet with Nightlife before booking them, but we saw them at another wedding and were very happy. I don't think it's necessary to meet with them, but that's just my opinion/comfort level!

I agree with the PP.  We did not meet with our DJ, but we know several people who have used Instant Request so we were comfortable without meeting in person.

I like to meet all of our vendors in person to make sure our personalities click and everything but that's just my preference. I don't think it's necessary but IMHO especially with someone like a DJ where personality is a big thing, I would prefer to meet him.

We did not meet with our DJ. I didn't even think about meeting with them.

felaney - most DJs are assigned the weeks leading up to your wedding - at this point, she'd just be hiring the company. You'd talk to them over the phone once they are assigned to you.

I know this, I'm saying my personal preference is to be able to meet with vendors first because I like to make sure they have the style and personality that we want in our wedding. We met with ours and are so happy that we did because now we know exactly what to expect on the wedding day and how he is in person. That being said, it seemed by the wording of the question that there was an option to meet with a DJ beforehand and especially after hearing some horror stories, DJ's included, I think it never hurts to meet a vendor before the wedding. Just my opinion :)

We hired Nightlife for our wedding and we met with the manager Jason.  He gave us 20% off for signing the day that we met.  You won't be assigned your DJ until the week of the wedding, but it was nice to get the discount.

We used Nightlife and did NOT like our DJ at all.  I wish we could have met him ahead of time (and picked someone else).  He was downright creepy.  Even the guests commented on him because apparently he was hitting on some female guests. He was drinking, which according to the owner is ok since the bartender offered (we personally did not offer alcohol to any vendors just food and non-alcoholic drinks).  I would have felt better if he had not been drinking, but that's just me.  The bartender hid the extra liquor at the end of the night because he was afraid the DJ would take it. The DJing part was fine, he had everyone dancing, picked good music, etc - but his personality was lacking.  I really liked the owner Joe, but overall, it was not a good experience.  Joe did not seem to care about our feedback either.  On the one hand, Nightlife is good because they have a lot of DJs so you don't have to worry about something happening and not having a DJ.  On the other, I wish they would have let us know our DJ further ahead of time. When I think about what we paid our DJ vs what we paid for our photographer, and what we got for that money, it makes me cringe./vent
