Poll: Registry Pros and Cons

FI and I are going to start registering soon and we're trying to narrow down the stores we want to use.  We know we'll have a registry at Crate and Barrel as well as Bed Bath & Beyond.  All of us knotties have heard the nightmare stories about guests not following the rules (not buying off the registry, forgetting the gift receipt) but I want to know what your Pros and Cons are about *where* you are registered.  For example, is the online system easy to use?  Were you able to return items that didn't have a receipt? Etc.

We've registered at BBB, CB, and Target.  I know people complain about Target but the stuff we registered for is stuff we definitely want so I'm not too worried about it.  We also thought about registering at REI but decided three places was more than enough.

I like Macys - good return policy, easy to maintain online, plus they donate a portion of the proceeds from gifts purchased off your registry to the charity of your choice. If you have a Macys card you also get a certain percentage of gifts purchased back in rewards points.

I used C&B and BB&B. I much preferred my C&B registry and actually received more from it than I did from BB&B. If you're doing C&B, find out when (or if) they're having a registry party because they offer food, drinks, product demos and the store is closed to regular customers. It was a great experience for us. I liked their online system and it was very easy to manage the registry from the website. I didn't need to return anything so I can't speak for their return policies. The big pros for BB&B is the ease of returns, lots of locations and the 20% off coupons that everyone seems to get. The problem that I had with them was that the stores besides the one in Cary never had any of our items in stock and a lot of my older guests wanted to actually go in and purchase something, not order it.

We are registered at BBB and Target

I've registered at Target, Belk, and Pampered Chef. The main thing I don't like about Target is that when something is no longer available, they don't give you the description or anything so you can choose another of the item. It just lists a big X and says "Item no longer available". What if it was something I really really wanted? Oh well. When I did the baby registry it was fine and that's where most people shopped! Pampered Chef sends an email when soemthing is about to go out. Otherwise I haven't had any activity so I don't know much else.

Kellybeth - are you talking about specialty items like china and punch bowls or something or did you have the issue with the "everyday" items not being in stock at other stores besides the Cary location (I'm guessing that was where you specifically registered?) Thanks for your input so far ladies!

We registeredd at Target and Crate and Barrel. We didn't really have any problems with Target. We went to the store and scanned everything and then set our website up. I wanted to add more stuff, but didn't realize I added a lot of stuff that said you could only by online. I found this out when my parents said they couldn't find those things in the store, so i went back and took all those things off. That was kinda annoying. We only got one double gift, but I was given a gift receipt, so i returned it and got store credit. No problem. I would recommend on the website to say something about including a gift receipt. We did this, and I'm thinking it worked.Crate and Barrel is where we registered for most of our stuff. The store staff was really helpful and the website was very easy to manage. The only problem is that since CB isn't everywhere (like Target) we didn't have anyone buy us anything from it for my bridal shower. I was really worried because we had most of our main things on it. I think people didn't want to travel to the mall, Target is more convenient. But once our Target stuff was all gone, we got most of the things from CB for our wedding. I never had any nightmares or people buying like 5 crockpots. My guests followed the rules and bought just from my registry. On my bridal shower invitations it said where I was registered, make sure you do this. HTH!

I know I've heard bad things about Target's registry, but it worked out fine for us.  It's true that it's a bit annoying to return something if you don't have a gift receipt, but it can be done.  (You use the Target registry kiosk to print a "gift register" which is a log of all gifts that have been purchased for you and this acts as a recepit for all of your gifts.  If the gift wasn't registered at all (like the person didn't scan your registry at the checkout), I think you get 3 returns for store credit with no issues but I didn't have that problem specifically.BB&B doesn't have all items in all stores.  A friend ordered something at the store and had it shipped to us.  Well it didn't come, so I had to call 3 different times to find my package (since I didn't order it, I didn't have the tracking number).  Evidently it had been returned to BB&B because the UPS delivery person had damaged it?  Anyway, it eventually came.  This is likely an isolated event...

I wanted to add that most people got things from Target.  My guess is that this occured since most people have a Target nearby while BB&B doesn't have as many stores.

My cookware and a few of the crystal pieces I asked for weren't really available to my guests. Specifically DH's family in Burlington - they had trouble with my BB&B registry so I ended up with random things that I didn't register for from random stores. DH's aunt told me that she had wanted to purchase a piece of my cookware but since BB&B didn't have ANY of it she had to come up with plan B...which for some reason meant a random item.

We registered and C&B BBB and restoration hardware...I initally had a lot of my main items on C&B but switched them over to BBB because they were our big ticket items and it made more sense because people could use the 20% off coupon.  for my shower I mainly got BBB items.  There have been some stuff off the C&B registry but not as much as I'd like.  Haven't gotten anything from Restoration hardware yet - I just registered for towels there because I figured if I was going to get towels I was going to get the nice ones I wanted.  I have two returns to do so we'll see how they handle them.  My stainless steel mixing bowls from C&B tarnished and my pizza stone from BBB grew mold on it when I put a pot on top of it (ewww!).  So I'll keep you posted how the returns go.
