music during entire wedding ceremony?

I am hiring a solo cellist, maybe a duo.  He is planning to play for an hour straight for my ceremony.  It is an outdoor ceremony, do you think he should stop playing while we are saying our vows or just let him play as background music?

I would have him stop during the vows. I think it would not only be distracting to your guests, but to you and your FI. That part of the ceremony is so special, and goes by so quickly, that I know I wouldn't have wanted anything to even potentially distract me from fully focusing on that moment.

Usually when a musician plays for the "entire ceremony" it means he/she will play at appropriate parts of the service, such as the lighting of a unity candle or a sand uniting or any special part of the service not spoken.

The musician should be instructed to stop playing whenever there is a reading or something spoken that the audience must hear clearly.  An experienced wedding musician will ask for the program to know when they will be expected to play and this should be decided between the wedding couple and the musician well ahead of the wedding date.

The musician should never play during the vows because your friends and family may not hear the vows clearly and may miss this special moment.  This is after all why they are all here to hear the bridal couple exchange their vows and express their love for one another,  the bride and groom should be the center of attention during the vows without the distraction from the musician.
