what leads up to testing someone for the diabeetus (gestational or otherwise)?

what symptoms are present / do they have to be present / could any tests have this result (i.e. you get a routine blood test for something else and they go, "holy sh1t, sugar!")/ etc.

i know that since I'm overweight there's more of a risk factor - but SIL was diagnosed with GD, and she's not even 100lbs soaking wet (so maybe the sudden weight gain for her?).

If you are pregnant, you get tested. No symptoms necessary.

I get tested for sugar levels every time I go to the doc. For me it was as simple as a series of cysts + the fact that I'm a big ol' fattie.

I don't know for people (like Hooka) who are not heavy, unless she's having all the signs, like frequent urination, constant thirst, highs and lows depending on what she eats, etc.

They will test you as part of your routine checks. The 1 hr is drink something wait an hour and they take blood. If you fail they give you a 3 hr.

i didn't realize that - are their signs that they look for in your initial bloodwork or do they just say at the _____ month mark, you do the 1 hour glucose test, and see what happens?

it's not that bad. they just make you fast for a couple hours, drink the orange pop (drink it chilled, but no ice), in 5 min then test your blood in one hour.

if you don't pass you'll do a 3 hour test where you'll have to drink the same stuff 3 different times and have you blood tested every hour.

I thought it was something that was done during physicals, but I guess not because in the past 5 years none of my doctors have done any bloodwork beyond TSH/cholesterol and a urine test for pregnancy. I went for a routine visit and told her about the drops in blood sugar. She made me come back today for a draw. I'm not sure why she needed 3 vials.

They ran my blood sugar as part of the whole shebang at my annual. A bigger risk factor for diabeetus is family history - if your sis had GD, there's a good likelihood you will, as well. And then, of course, GD can turn into regular old D, like it did for my BFF (who was not overweight when she got pregnant, and is still pretty much "normal"-sized.).

Blood glucose (sugar) is one of the components of the basic metabolic panel (AKA Chem-7), which is one of the two most routine labs (in addition to complete blood count), and if they find that the blood glucose is elevated, they may test your fasting blood glucose. If you have two fasting blood glucose levels that are greater than 126, that is diagnostic of diabetes. They could also check your hemoglobin A1c, which is a measure of how your blood glucose has averaged over the past few months, and if this is elevated, it is highly suggestive of diabetes. People also get tested if you have symptoms of diabetes (more thirsty than usual, more hungry than usual, peeing more than usual). Every pregnant woman gets tested for gestational diabetes around 20-26 weeks.

GD testing is something everyone goes through, usually right around the beginning of 3rd tri from what I've heard. FWIW a college friend who was a soccer player & had 6 pack abs before getting pregnant ended up with GD while another grad school friend who was my size when she had her son didn't have it. Kind of seems random.

As part of my IF work up they discovered I had IR (insulin resistance) after making me do the glucose tolerance test. My fasting BGL & ALC were normal but according to the GTT my insulin production was huge but the quality of my insulin sucked. The GTT was far worse than any of the other poking of prodding I've experienced! Way too sugary.

From what I've heard of the GD testing, I'm glad AZ didn't get to me until delivery. I can't imagine having to fast halfway through pregnancy - I was already big enough that I couldn't eat more than a sandwich at a sitting, so I was eating all the time. And god forbid I had to go three hours - someone would have died. Probably not me, but hunger-induced rage is a funny thing.

Is it genetic? Because my mom, aunt and grandmother all had it. If it's genetic I may have to rethink my decision to have kids. GD is my number one pregnancy fear.

there is some thought that GD can be genetic. my MIL had it with all 8 (yes i said 8) of her kids. but to date neither SIL has had it and they've had 5 pregancies between them so far.

You usually get the 1 hr between 24-28 weeks. They did it early with me because i failed the 1 hr with my first pregnancy.

You have to fast from midnight the night before until after the test. That's why the 3 hour sucked. No food from like 8pm until noon.
