  I would agree with your friend. It is their job to ensure everything goes smoothly on your wedding day. I used to work at a hotel and I don't remember the catering managers ever getting tips.

  I don't think that you tip the catering manager. My reception hotel charges an 18% service fee, and it is my understanding that this is their "tip". However, if your person went above and beyond, a nice card and flowers or a gift card would be nice. I may do that for the catering manager at our hotel reception site (if I'm totally impressed with him on-site).

  I agree that they are probably getting paid enough to forego a tip. I also believe that most of the people who expect tips don't deserve or need them. I'm not talking about the servers who get paid $7.15, but the hairdressers who charge $150+ for 45 minutes worth of work....seriously? If you are extremely pleased with a vendor, the best thing you can do for them is get their name out to your friends and family and get them more business.

  Hi there! Congrats on the wedding! I thought I would chime in as I am a Catering Manager! The way it works at my place is the 18% service charge actually goes to the set up team and the servers, thats how they are paid. I just recieve a salary, which is in no way based on the cost of a wedding or event. Most of the time we do not get tips, and it's not expected. I'd say about 20 - 25% of events leave a tip for the catering manager, anything from a bottle of wine to a few hundred bucks. Again, not expected, but much appreciated if you feel we went above and beyond for your event. I'm sure it's different everywhere, however. Hope that is helpful! ~S
