To video or not to video...

...that is my current question.  I would love to hear everyone's take on this.FI says he doesn't want it because he hates seeing himself on video.  FI's parents are paying for most of the wedding and they've done enough.  So if I want it, I'll probably have to pay for it myself.  I'm considering just taping the ceremony only.  When I was married the first time, I watched my video several times.  I'm afraid I'm going to regret it if we don't do it.Thoughts?

if it was me.. I would tape it... I would love to watch it... sometimes detials fade in your head... what about if you ever have children they might want to watch it.

See, sometimes I regret not having a professional videographer at my wedding...but sometimes I don't.  I had a family friend video tape it for us and my violinist/DJ taped the ceremony and reception, too.  We have YET to watch our tape and it's been almost a year since the wedding.  I don't know if we'll ever watch them...but I know we still look at our pictures on a regular basis.  So, to me I'd rather save the money. but I will say, Mandy's video was awesome and Adam Kegg rocks.

stephie, I went through this same self debate a while ago. Videography was not in the original budget so to add it, I would have a max budget of $1000 (that I would find somewhere else???).  Adam Kegg was probably the most affordable I could find, and his minimum package that would have worked for my needs was just a little under that.  I admit his videos are great (especially for the price he charges), but then I kept thinking about how often I would actually watch it and in terms of $$/view and in the end, it just wasn't worth it to me. If you just want the clips of you and your FI exchanging vows and all that during the ceremony, maybe have a family member just video it?  It seems only worthwhile to hire a professional videographer if you want the artsy touches, the pre-ceremony interviews, etc.  I also went overbudget on my photography line, to have extra hours of wedding day coverage and 2 photogs... so adding videography also seemed unjust to my budget with that in mind...

Have a friend or family member get the ceremony. That's the only part of my video that I watch. PS, mine was videoed by my aunt in the front row :)

I didn't really want a videographer, but my FI insisted. From my experience, my parents never watch theirs and aren't even able to because we don't have a VCR anymore. So I figured it would be a waste of money. My FI really wants it because he wants something to remind him of how the wedding went in case something happens or to show the kids. But in the end, my family, FI, and I took a vote(how we solve everything in my family haha) and video won out so we are doing one.

I think I'll just have someone video our ceremony.  It's not important to me really to have a professionally produced video (although I'm sure they are awesome!)Technology is so fantastic today that we can use a high quality camera and get great results.  We probably wouldn't watch it but once, but it would be nice to save and show to future children some day.

I don't have any more money and I splurged big time on photography so we're just having a family member video the ceremony.

This is a very good question! Originally I didn't even bother to put it into the budget because I figured that we would never watch it. When talking with the planner, my mom brought it up as a "wish list" item if there's any money left in the budget. After looking up some video highlights online it makes me want to squeeze it into the budget, but we'll have to see once we book the rest of the vendors.  If we don't have the money for a pro, then we'll get a family member to video it in exchange for a good seat at the ceremony, haha.I will admit that I have been known to pull out and enjoy the videos my parents shot back when we were growing up of dance recitals, birthdays and field days.  So maybe the future kids will enjoy seeing the wedding video.

I am only paying adam kegg for the raw footage of the ceremony and like an hour or two of the reception and it was really affordable in my opinion. No one in my family has a camcorder or else I would have asked them. I also didn't want someone who hardly uses a camcorder to do it as it would probably be real shaky and make me sick watching it(like that one movie about the giant squid thing in NY did..Cloverfield? I was sooo naueseous after that movie!)

I think it's one hundred percent worth it!!  Even if you just have a family member tape the ceremony from the front row, like Lynn said, you'll be so glad you did.

LOL, Apple.  Thanks for the input everyone.  How about the married ladies--do you watch your videos?

I seriously watch my video all the time.  Not the whole thing all the time, but definitely parts of it.  :)

Well Mandy, you are in theater :)  I'd assume most theater folks are comfy with the idea of watching themselves on tape.

Hahaha actually we're the WORST at watching ourselves on video.  Seriously.  I'd rather die than watch myself on video any other time except my wedding.  Our videographer was aweseome, and we were just so happy that day and it shows.  It's fun to watch. :)

Do it!  I totally regret not having a video.  I heard my niece was so funny when she walked down the aisle, but I never got to see it, and we all know how great my photographer was, so obviously she didn't get a shot of it.

We debated also and very last minute used one of my sister's friends who is trying to get her own videography business started. I def say DO IT!! I missed a lot... honestly I can't even tell you what I said during my ceremony! It happened so fast and there were little moments that were so special that weren't captured in photos (in the middle of our vows a huge monarch butterfly flew right between DH and I it was so random and special). Also, our friends are pretty crazy and our reception had A LOT of funny moments that we were asked for weeks leading up to receiving our video if we had it yet because our friends want to see it really bad! We are going to have a viewing party because some of the moments are hilarious :)

I'm with Mandy on this one, but we also had the same videographer, Adam Kegg. I watch my video quite a bit as well. It was such a great investment and something I'm so grateful to have. And there ceremony is awesome, but I watch the reception and the "extras" more so than the ceremony. You forget who was there and you don't know whats going on all the time, so it is fun to relive the party from your guests point of view. DO IT!

Well I emailed Adam but he has to check on availability (has a tentative conflict but nothing firm).  He said he'd get back to me.  If I can get him, I think I'll have him do the ceremony only.  Maybe I can talk FI into the whole shebang but we'll see.

Stephie - I hope he works out. And strongly consider doing the entire thing. You will not be disappointed. My husband doesn't like watching himself either, but LOVED our video. Sometimes I catch him watching our "mini video" Adam made for us.

I hope so too.  I think if I can't get him, I'll just let it go.Donna, I hear ya, I did the same thing because we were so sure we weren't having video.  I need to quit thinking of things to spend money on.

I'm late on this, but we added video last minute and I'm glad that we did. I love it. It would've been different if a guest had just recorded it. I probably would only want to watch it maybe once. It's completely different when you have 2 camera guys getting all the angles and you're mic'ed up and it's edited and set to music and on a DVD. It makes the viewing much more enjoyable. My guys did a great job (Autumn Video) and I'm so glad we shelled out for it.I don't think you'd regret spending the money. There are a million other wedding details that aren't worth the money. In my opinion video is worth it.

I splurged big time on photography so we're just having a family member video the ceremonyDitto, except I think we're going to buy a camcorder and have FBIL (who loves to do that stuff - he might even edit it for us) video it. That way, we can use the camcorder for the honeymoon or other events, or for kiddos in a couple of years. And Apple - as far as it being shaky, the new digital camcorders have great image stabilization. Seriously, play around with them next time you're in Best Buy or something. It's amazing.

I have no money left in the budget so we are going to have my cousin video the ceremony for us.
