Wedding Party

bridal party dresses

Hey all, for my bridesmaid's/made of honor's dresses I was going to let them pick out their own style as long as it was cocktail lenth and all the same color. However, I'm not sure what to do about different fabric types. Dresses made of chiffon look quite different from dresses made of satin. Should I have them all pick dresses made out of the same material or do you guys think that the dresses will look fine even if they are of different material types. On a second note, I'm having trouble finding the color I want for my maids. I'm looking for turquoise blue dresses. David's bridal does not have this color. I know that DaVinci/Impressions and Eden's Bridal does. Are there any other company's that you could suggest? Should I have the dresses made from a seamstress?

  • That's really up to you. I've seen it done both ways and it looks fine. If you want a personal opinion, I think that keeping them in the same fabric looks a little more "formal" ... not that different fabrics look bad, but I think that the "Find your own turquoise dress from anyplace you want" approach works better for less formal weddings. I told my two BMs that I'm fine with them picking different dresses, but I want the fabric and skirt length to be the same. Maybe look into Alfred Angelo, Watters and Bill Levkoff dresses. You could also check department stores, like Nordstrom.com and Dillards.com. I just looked on the J. Crew and Ann Taylor websites, and they have some nice turquiose dresses available now as well. Also try overstock.com and bluefly.com.

  • In general, I really like the idea of giving each girl the chance to pick her own style. I'm planning on doing so after asking for length and color uniformity. I was cautioned about telling my girls to pick their own and then giving them too many guidelines. You could choose three (or two or four or whatever) styles that you like and think go together and they could choose from that? On the flip side, I've been a BM in a few weddings where the fabric was different, and it looked great. Go with your gut; what do you like? Also, if you have trouble finding the right dress for the right price, you could always incorporate the color through a sash or shoes or jewelry or flowers, etc.

  • I think it's fine to ask the BMs each how much they're willing to spend and then go to a dress shop where they can try on dresses by a designer that fits the overall range. From there the gals can pick dresses that fit their tastes and that are all the same color and fabric.
  • What I'm doing is....there is a website with discount designer bridesmaid dresses.  http://www.bestbridalprices.com/ (shameless plug).  I went to dessy.com first, and chose my color and length and wrote down all of the style numbers.  I then emailed the girls with the links to both websites (dessy, com actually shows you the backs of the dresses) and each style they could choose from and to get it in the color I wanted.I had like 28 different styles for them to choose from. Some are reluctant to buy when they have never tried on, so I solved that by....dessy.com has authorized retailers.  The girls can, if they choose, go to a bridal boutique in their area (most are from out of town) and try on their respective dress and/or purchase their dress from the boutique they choose.
