Calories vs. aspartame.....

Ok so There has been a lot of controversy on aspartame and weight loss..... I was wondering is it more beneficial to eat more calories to not have sugar free candy/food that doesn't contain aspartame. Or are you better off eating/drinking the aspartame in the food such as sugar free and diet sodas?  Everything I have read doesn't really have a straight forward answer as to what you should do... so what do you think?

Re: Calories vs. aspartame.....

  • I love diet coke...I drink it a couple of times a week. I figure it is better to get my sweet or fix via this versus real sugar but agree the verdict is unknown.
  • I love diet sodas and drink one almost every day.  That said, one of my good friends works in a lab and says they are getting ready to publish a paper on the fact that artificial sweeteners mess with the way your body processes real sugar, so it ends up not being fully metabolized when you do eat it, and stored as a harmful biochemical intermediate instead.  However, I see her drink diet drinks all the time.  Basically, take research like that seriously, but also realize that they're feeding the mice like half their weight in aspartame.
  • I for one would pick calories.. I am allergic to Aspartame and get dizzy & violent migrane headaches if I have it.. I can chew gum with aspartame in it with no prob because there isnt much in it but drink 1 diet soda & I am on the couch with violent headaches.. I have also heard that aspartame isnt good for you.. of coarse no sweeteners are.. I love soda.. but I would rather drink dr pepper every once in awhile in moderation then to deal with aspartame,.

  • For me, it depends on what it is. Certain products give me a stomach ache (I don't know if it's the taste or the artificial sweetener used), but for the most part, I don't think there's really anything wrong with it as far as typical daily/weekly use (which is rather limited for most people).I drink diet soda, eat Yoplait Light, drink Crystal Light, etc. I don't eat artificially sweetened candies, many artificially sweetened yogurts, sugar free syrups (like in lattes), etc. I think you're fine in moderation, just like regular sugar. There are a lot of things, though, that simply taste better with sugar, in which case I just save up my WW points for them.

  • I personally try to stay away from artificial stuff if I can help it. FI and I have been switching back to whole, unprocessed foods as much as possible. I think that some sugar is better than a chemical your body can't really break down (says the hypocrite who is taking medicine to help speed weight loss... sorry, I know it's bad).So I guess it's your own personal preference?
  • Hard for my to say this, I am highly allergic to aspartame and any artificial sugar! I get violently ill within minutes of eating or drinking it... my husband worries when he drinks it so he usually won't kiss me for awhile afterward.I stay away from it and had no problems losing weight and maintaining my weight loss for almost 3 months now withno artificial sugars.
  • I try to stay away from aspartame, It actually gives me a slight case of the shakes for some reason. I recently stopped buying Fiber One yogurt because it now has aspartame in it. It is lower calories but sweetened with aspartame. I guess you have to weigh the pros and the cons for yourself.
