Suspended for wearing plaid

Has anyone seen this?  A new dress code at a public school in Indiana doesn't allow any prints, including flowers and plaid.http://abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=8417872&cid=ESPNheadline

Re: Suspended for wearing plaid

  • about time. I'm sorry but their is no good excuse for plaid.
  • That is effing ridiculous. I would be glad to remove my child from your school. Some families can't afford to buy all new clothes with no prints.

  • I went to a school that only allowed khaki or navy pants or skirts, white or gray polos, a navy or white cardigan, and black shoes without a heel. So, I don't really see a problem with this dress code. And as long as they told the families of the dress code prior to the start of school, I don't think they can complain about their kids getting in trouble. Break the rules, suffer the consequences.

  • My brothers went to a Catholic all-boys high school where they had to wear dress shirts and ties all the time, of any plain color, but I believe that plaid was not allowed there either. The younger of my two elder brothers (confusing enough?) got around this by wearing the loudest and clashiest combos he could think of, like a maroon shirt with a brown, orange and pink striped tie, or a purple shirt with a mustard yellow tie. He and I used to think this was the funniest thing ever.

  • I can see a strict dress code like this (and like mine and bel's) at a Catholic school, but at a public school, I think it's crazy.  People may not be able to afford a whole new plain wardrobe.

  • It is not just plaid from what the article said. No prints whatsoever. All solids. BORING!!! Even thought the majority of my wardrobe is solid colors I have a few cute print tops.
  • It doesn't sound like the school did a very good job of notifying parents about what was acceptable or not, it 10% of the student body got suspended on the second day alone.

  • Clearly something is wrong here if they can waste all this time worrying about kids wearing florals and plaid. What about kids actually learning something?
  • I just read through the dress code, and it looks like they are trying to prevent any types of dress that can be associated with gang activity. It seems like one could be dressed within the code by going to a craft store, buying a bunch of those $3 t-shirts in the right size, and wearing them with plain jeans. That doesn't sound so bad.

  • Yeah, this seems like a poor communication issue on the part of the school district. As for the argument about finances, it is kind of specious. Parents will buy clothes for their children, and clothes that fit into the new dress code are as cheap, or cheaper than, other clothes.
  • Which gang wears the flower print?

  • Which gang wears the flower print? We are a secret gang I cannot divulge that information.
  • I'm sorry but their is no good excuse for plaid. I'm sorry, but there is no good excuse for not knowing the difference between their/they're/there.

  • p2, you're just picking on sassy because she doesn't wash her hair!!
  • They're there for their school work, not to be in a flower print gang.

  • Public schools in or around Indianapolis, IN also make the kids pay for portions of their text books.  This I found to be ridiculous!
  • I'm not surprised. For the last month there has been a ton of school dress code commericals.  There is only 2 public high schools.  One school wears blue bottoms and white shirts.  The other maroon bottoms and pink shirts.  Both schools have a plaid skirt in the color of the school they go to.Pants can not be baggy and must be belted.  Shirts cannot be baggy either and must be tucked in.  This is so they cannot conceal weapons. I'm not a parent (or teacher) and even I know the rules, yet the first of every year a ton of kids are sent home the first few days of school.  Then ,of course, by October I see baggy pants and untucked shirts while driving by the school.  I really think they only enforce the policy for a month or so.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • No Georgia, it's because she doesn't wash her hair, chews her toenails...and...pisses in the sink.

  • oh yeah.. Both schools have a maternity uniform also.  That sadly I see way too often for my liking.

  • We don't want students out of the classroom. That's not the point," he said. "We just don't want to have any issue with print at all. There are too many ... issues of trying to determine what's acceptable and what's not This is the part that bothers me. Ok, I understand not wanting graphics or words on the shirts. But no design whatsoever? I don't know how hard it is to determine that floral, plaid and strips are 'acceptable'?

  • Just because so many kids were suspended on the first day means nothing. Our school just implemented the exact same rules. We had about 4 dozen kids sent home to change clothes, and the change had been advertised since May.

  • I personally think all schools should have uniforms. I went to catholic school that had a specific type of plaid skirts/jumpers we had to buy at a specialty shop. It made my life 1000 times easier.
  • ndz, that's basically what our school is. Khakis only, collared shirts only, solid colors only.

  • This is the same sort of uniform the school I coach at has.  The only exception is that they can wear shirts that are school colors/school designs/etc.  And, athletes can wear warmups/sweats if they are team logoed on their game days. When I was in high school, we had racial/gang fights partially driven by what people wore.  They used brands to signify gang membership (nike, addidas, etc.).  They used brands to pick on people from a lower class who weren't able to afford the pricey stuff.  As students, a lot of us asked for uniforms like this to minimize it.  It took them almost 15 years since we started asking to get around to it.  Personally, I think it's a great thing.  And, on the financial side, I believe kids who can't afford the uniforms can get vouchers and/or coupons to help defray the costs for them here.  Plus, they're really cheap to begin with.
