save the date - for what?

Okay, so I understand that save the date's help out-of-town guests plan their vacation easier. But since I am a bride on-a-budget in these hard economical times, I'm thinking about just sending out invitations earlier than usual to the out-of-towners in leiu of save the dates. Is this wrong?

not at all.... they arents really ncesary. im not doing that... the only thing i did is when we had out engagement party i made save the dates on business cards and attached a magnet to the back (which now i found out can be done through vistaprints) so only those "close guests" recieved that save that date.... i would like to send one to eveyone since my wedding is labor day weekend.... but my family thinks its unessesary... so im not doing anything. like you stated, im sending out my invites a littl earlier.

Don't send out the invites earlier than 6-8 weeks. People will lose them and forget to RSVP. If you really think people need more notice than this to schedule travel (and most people don't if they know it is coming and they are travelling domestically) send out an email STD. You can make a website with all the travel info and email everyone with a link. 90% of our guests were OOT. I blocked off the hotel 9 months in advance and sent out STDs 6 months in advance with all the info. No one reserved a room until the invites went out, and most people did it at about 5 weeks out. Not to mention, several people emailed me after the STDs went out to ask me to remind them of the date. Think about it. If you have in your mind that you are going to go to X some time in the spring for so and so's wedding, you probably aren't going to book a flight or a hotel room until about a month before, shortly after the invitation comes. If you have international guests, I'd recommend making a packet just for them with all the travel info and sending it out early.

I don't think it's wrong. but I do agree with pp that early invitations may be more likely to be forgotten, however, there are other things you can do as well.Send STDs to just the OOTs, not everyone.STD postcards are cheaper to make and mail. orEmailing STDs to the oot guests is free.For those without email, give them a call, or have your parents/friends call, to give them a heads up at least. Be sure to have all the info available when you do so they can jot it down.

I have a small wedding 50-60ppl. What I did for STD was to call everybody that I have on my invitees list and tell them to save the date. So, I saved all the work and money of the STD cards.
