How are you serving?

I am just curious as to how many people had or are having a plated dinner vs. a buffet.  I've heard there's not that much difference in cost.  From you're experience what do you think?

Re: How are you serving?

  • We are having a plated dinner, out of the 10 last weddings I have been to 9 were plated, I think that it is nicer for your guests to be able to be served and not have to wait in line, seems to move things along faster as well Just my opinion

  • Lots of people like the idea of a buffet cause you can eat as much as you want vs. plated. But with a buffet, it makes  it hard to go around and do your "thank you rounds" cause people arn't in their seats, and then you need to remember to go back...pain in the asssI REALLY wanted to do plated, but my parents forced to do family style. Now I kind of like the idea...The best of both worlds, guest can eat as much as they want without the hassle of having to leave their tables. As a guest, I've been to both. I prefer being served at the table. I hate waiting in lines. And the wedding I went to, the bar and buffet were near eachother and people were all confused cause the lines meshed together and no1 knew which line they were in.
  • We did plated dinner. I prefer it because I am always teh person who ends up instead of eating dinner going to the buffet several times for grandmas and great aunts ect. Also I am a klutz so I will in all those trips up making sure others get fed spill food on myself and thus ruin an outfit. So I much prefer plated. Also it feels fancier and more likel going out to eat as opposed to family style dinner. If a special occasion liek a friend or family wedding I want to have it feel special and being served my meal not having to serve myself and others makes it feel more special
  • I really want to do buffet but plated is cheaper by about $2 a plate so we might just have to go for it!!! I'd say base it on what is important to you and think back of what you enjoyed better!!
  • We did a buffet--We wanted our guests to have choices, and everyone raved about the food(an Italian Buffet). It was not cheaper than a plated meal.We had no issues with going around after our meal and talking--We didn't do it until after they were done eating(for the most part). No issue at all.The last two plated meals I went to were cold and I was not pleased with the side choices. That also deterred me from serving a plated meal(one wedding was very expensive, and the plated meal was not cheap).Do what you would like, though. I like choice and a properly warm meal when I eat:)  However, I'm sure there are some amazing stories about plated meals, as well.

  • Oh, and for guests with walking issues--they were served by a server(which I thought was nice). No problems with people waiting in a line, though, for us. . .The place we had our wedding at were extremely efficient in everything they did, and really, everything went smoothly.

  • I like both ways. They both have their pros and cons. Our venue offered a plated dinner with tons of options so we went with a plated dinner.
  • We did stations.  It offered the variety of a buffet without the long lines.  In my area, buffets are the norm.  I don't think my family would have been able to understand if I'd asked them to make a meal selection on the rsvp.  Just sending the rsvp was a huge challenge for them.
  • first: it's from YOUR opinion. you're is a contraction of 'you are'. now-we did a table side order plated and NOT the terrible 'order on your RSVP card'. guests were offered seconds or other entrees after their first was done.

  • Actually it's not from YOUR opinion, it's from YOUR experience.  If you're going to take the time to correct a simple typo, get it right.By the way, YOU'RE a joke.
  • I'm doing a plated, the reason being I was looking at a wedding site and the coordinator brought up a good point...with buffets people are always eating! You get up to do your first dance....people are eating. You go to cut the cake....people are eating...etc. I know people will probably argue with me on this saying people are much more respectful than that but ever wedding that I have been to where they served a buffet people we always eating!

  • Chelsenator--We did our first dance BEFORE dinner, didn't do a cake cutting, but really, people stopped eating after about 40 minutes after we served ourselves.  We didn't have any planned events after dinner, an hour into the reception, the dance floor was filled, we made our rounds, and had a great time.I've never been to a buffet reception where people ate constantly. Odd.

  • We had a buffet of apps, pasta, and other stations.  Personally. I don't generally eat at sit down dinner receptions (except for the cheese and crackers at cocktail hour) How can you expect to please people with such a narrow range of food? Even if the food isn't dead cold or horrible, what if it has something your guest dislikes or is allergic to!  Drinking on an empty stomach at some weddings always ends poorly. I can tell you more about yummy pizza I've ordered after those weddings! To me a buffet is always best, more choice and more chance of your guests being able to eat it!
