    Hi unfortunately this is considered tacky or poor etiquette.  A better way to go about it is to invite only the amount of people that you can afford to pay for, or to do a cocktail reception where you serve only appetizers and cocktails.  You could also have a reception during the off-season (winter) or on a Friday instead of a Saturday.Hope this helps!

    The reception is considered your "thank you" to your guests for coming to wedding. Like the raspberry_bride said, there are other options. Have a smaller wedding and only invite the number of people you can afford, a cocktail reception, cake and punch, or you can have a destination wedding. There are lots of ways to have a wedding on a budget.Also, remember that none of the parents are obligated to pay for anything. If they offer, it is extremely generous.These days, lots (maybe even most) of people pay for their own weddings these days.

    where are you located? If you are near Toronto I know a really affordable venue where you could do your own food and booze
