Titanium? Over $400?

FI and I went to look at wedding bands tonight and he found a titanium wedding band that has both a matte and brushed finish (although the brushed finish had a slightly sparkly appearance - not like a typical brushed look) and it was over $400.00. This is a small mom and pop jeweler in town and we've already purchased my engagement and wedding band from them (and FI got a really good price on my rings, he says), but we're curious about why this ring might have come with such a high price tag. The (clueless) salesperson answered that question by saying that it's because that ring was being discontinued and it had a "comfort band." Neither of these really explain the high price of this ring to us, but what the hell do we know. We hopped online to do some research and couldn't find anything to compare to this price. Even titanium rings with diamonds were cheaper on nearly every site we visited. A side note: FI and I were originally looking for a tungsten with carbide ring and the salesperson said, "This one is titanium. But tungsten... titanium... basically the same thing." We loved the titanium one we saw, but almost $500? Does that sound right?

Re: Titanium? Over $400?

  • sometimes they are mixed with other metals which make them more expensive. We saw some mixed with platinum which were a lot more expensive.
  • Thanks Fej! I will ask them about that when we talk to them tomorrow.

  • Shannon - I looked at the pic you referenced in your post, and my DH has a ring that looks just like that, with the Comfort Fit cut also. Cost $125 at JCPenney, which has totally upgraded its jewelry in the past five years. There is NO WAY that ring should cost almost $500, and I would not deal with this jeweler you have at all.  He might take off SOME of the too-high price on the ring.  Do you think it's likely that he'll go from $500 all the way to $125?
  • Late reply but FI got tungsten for $350+tax and it's a comfort fit (rounded edges on inside). Comfort fit actually has to be sized 1/2 smaller then normal ring size we were told (and was actually true when FI tried it on). Also, we were told that they now have a laser to cut off titanium but it's a really difficult process. Not sure how valid that is...

  • I work in jewelry and none of our basic titanium bands (and that sounds like what you're describing) run at about $150.00 and that's without a discount. That also includes a lifetime warranty that covers if you ever need a new ring size we exchange you out for a brand new band since the metal is too hard to be resized. Just about all men's bands come with comfort fit when they're made in titanium. It just means that the band is rounded on the inside so it doesn't cut into the finger. When a band is in gold sometimes that means the band is thicker, and thus more expensive. Titanium isn't an expensive metal though so unless the band is really thick there isn't really a reason that there would be a price difference.Tungsten is more likely to break (And thats how they remove it in the case of an accident) but it is more scratch resistant.  A similar ring would be one in black ceramic they are also super scratch resistant but they are closer to the weight of a titanium band.Titanium is lighter but it isn't scratch resistant in the way that tungsten is. It does hold up better than gold because it doesn't dent. It also tends to be less expensive. Contrary to popular belief titanium CAN be cut off the finger and will also snap under extreme pressure. It was a rumor started by jewelers who didn't want to lose the larger gold band sales selling titanium that they couldn't be removed.Sorry for the long post but I hope that helps!
