We're doing the unity candle b/c my mom wants to.  I don't really want to lug around a jar of sand forever either.  Both are nice and very symbolic.

We are doing a sand ceremony.  Our wedding is on the beach, so a candle would be a challenge.  Plus we like having a keepsake from our wedding day that would look nice enough to keep on a shelf.  I can't picture displaying a unity candle, but of course that is just my taste.  In addition, the sand we choose has meaning to us.  My mother is bringing sand from the beach we grew up at -- Huntington Beach, CA.  That will be the base in the bottom.  Then my FI has red sand from a hike he went on in NV.  I have white sand from Kuaui, the west coast vacations in HI or Mexico.  Then we are going to top off the jar with sand from our ceremony site.  So for us, even the sand is meaningful.

We decided not to do either one.
