Boston venue bar prices

My venue is charging us the following prices for the bar:

Wine: $22/bottle ($7 a glass if we go cash)
Beer: $5/bottle
Soda, Juice, and Water: $1.75 each

Are these reasonable prices?

Also, do the Massachusetts liquor laws prohibit flat-rate per-person open bars? I know a lot of people who were charged $15/person for an open bar, but I never saw that option when I was venue-shopping.

Re: Boston venue bar prices

  • For a host bar that seems reasonable. MA liquor laws do not prohibit a flat-rate per person charge but there may be some local ordinances that do. Most of the venues we looked at offered a choice of a host bar (or cash bar) and open bar. We are paying $34 a person for delux (mid shelf) open bar for 5 hours. $15 seems a little low for full open bar.

  • Our venue was like $15/person for the first hour and $7/person for each additional hour.  So, for 5 hour open bar it was $43/person.
  • My venue is charging $31 per person for 5 hours for full bar, and $26 for beer and wine.  We didn't go through the cash option as that was one thing we absolutely did not want.

  • Our bar option was $18 pp for full open "top shelf" liquor.

  • I paid $20pp for open bar at my wedding downtown a couple years ago. A per person price was definitely the right way to go for us because we had some big partiers in the crowd.
