Common question I'm sure -- What about rain?

Hey everyone, I'm new here. My FI and I just got engaged a little over a week ago and want to get married in Michigan where we're both from (we live in TX currently). The thing we miss most about Michigan is its beautiful lakes, and we have found a really beautiful lakeside gazebo for a ceremony. (Only $50 to reserve!)

We like this venue (http://www.metroparks.com/parks/rental_details.aspx?ID=9&RID=129). It's gorgeous (you can't really tell from the pictures on the site), and has little fun details like taking a trackless train to get from parking to the point. I couldn't ask for more really.

I'm not concerned about rain, but my parents are freaking out. I keep saying that we should just reserve a pavilion too in case it rains (http://www.metroparks.com/parks/rental_details.aspx?ID=9&RID=53), but I think they're worried more about getting to/from transportation to the train to the pavilion if it's raining. Couldn't we just use golf umbrellas? Or even a beach umbrella if they're afraid my dress will get wet?

People DO do the rain thing if it happens, right? Any other options you can think of that might make my parents feel better?

  • Our back up plan was our indoor reception site in case of bad weather. Do you have an indoor reception site?
  • You should have some shelter for your guests in case of inclement weather. Umbrellas are a great idea, but they don't help with sideways rain!
  • I meant umbrellas to travel to the shelter from the train, not standing watching an outdoor reception in the rain! :) That would be nuts.

I do have an indoor reception, but would I then buy more time or just cut into the time I've already booked? I would need to make sure they rearrange the room too because my buffet is on the dance floor (the only room available, and is removed for dancing later). Hmm.

  • I am also new to this and wanting an outside wedding in Illinois next fall, chance of rain is pretty 50/50.  Ill be watching this post to see if you come up with any more ideas before I do!!!  Could you buy a small three sided tent?? decorate it up with flowers and whatever else you want too...get married there...and guess have some sort of cover (I'm still thinking on that one lol)  Or if its only a small light rain, be pretaired and have lots of umbrellas in your wedding party color..each brides maid a unbrella, grooms men with unbrellas, then guess with unbrellas...It sounds like a lot but I have seen pictures where it looks ADORABLE in the professional pictures!!! LOL Ill let you know if I have anymore ideas. :)) Good Luck!!!
  • I am also having an outdoor wedding and I am planning on using the reception site as a backup site for the wedding if it rains. I don't have my ceremony or reception site yet, its REALLY hard to find a place that will let me decorate! lol.

  • We are renting a tent with side flaps for our backyard wedding. if we need to cancel it, they keep 30% deposit. We thought of cancelling it if the weather looks good the week of the wedding.
  • WE are also having an outdoor wedding, and indoor reception is our backup.  Talk to the manager there  Im sure they have dealt with this issue a million times.  One thing we were told was get married on the dance floor, the guests sit at their tables like they would for dinner.... not ideal but either is rain.    Or see if they would set up the table and chairs after the ceremony, while you get pics done.
  • I was married on a beach and pretty much had no backup plan. I prayed for sun and just checked weather.com for the stat for the month and day of my wedding from the previous year to see how rainy it was and how much it rained. If you have the option thats great but don't stress too much if you're not getting married in an overly rainy month.

  • My fiance and I are getting married outdoors as well and rain in Saskatchewan is always something that we worry about. What we are planning on doing is renting a gazebo type thing so that the guests can stay dry as well and us and the wedding party. And always make sure that a week before and even the day before when you are setting up for the reception check the weather because then you can always set up a gazebo or whatever for the ceremony just in case if it does then no one is stuck out in the rain setting it up the day of your wedding while your getting ready.
