Wedding Woes

I am a glutton for punishment

Remember last year how I swore off yard sales after the old lady club yard sale that netted a whole $10?

H and I got rid of a guest bedroom and made an office for him so I was trying to sort through all of my crap that was displaced when we did that and I was all "Dang, this is a bunch of stuff!  I bet I can make a TON of money!"  Okay, maybe not, but as long as I'm going through the process of sorting I might as well put price tags on it and do a yard sale, right?  This time around I won't pay for any ads or signage and I don't have anyone counting on me to do anything.  Also, my stuff won't be sitting amongst the things from the other old ladies that came complete with wasp nests and heavy moth ball smells.

And, it seems that doing it for myself rather than for old lady club is much more motivating.  I am getting rid of so much stuff.  Childhood toys?  Gone!  Wedding gifts?  Goodbye! Costume jewelry from an elderly aunt that I just can't justify keeping until the end of time?  Outta here!

I even got H to cough up a few books (but only a few).  I'm going to be leaning HARD on him this week to get through the garage and cull out a bunch more.

In general I am at a prime time to have a better idea of the stuff we really need.  I have a better idea of what my future holds than I did when we moved here 5 years ago.  And I know that there is another move coming soon and I don't want to get caught with all of this junk then.  Do I need 8 thermal blankets and three sets of twin sheets for my kid's future slumber parties?  No. Do I need these three cake platters in case I ever get into baking?  No.  Do I need this sewing machine and tubs of fabric and yarn for all the crafting I am going to do?  No.

If I knew now that we would for sure be moving to some tiny apartment next there is a lot more I would get off, but it seems sort of silly to dump all of our furniture now and live in an empty house for a year.  I can always have another yard sale! :)

  • Not necessarily a squee.  That move just might be to somewhere worse.  Like my parents' basement.

    yay for decluttering!

  • We did this not too long ago.  I decided that we needed to stop collecting "stuff".  We got rid of a lot, but I just donated it to the blind.  After the last yard sale I lived through, I decided it just wasn't worth it.
  • I am totally jealous of your cleaning and organizing. I binged last night, but it mostly just moving stuff around - I'm running pretty lean these days.

    Woohoooo!!

Is there anyone in your neighborhood having a sale soon?  Doubling up at least seems to h
    help get people in.
  • I thought about saying something to my neighbor across the street, but I decided I didn't want to commit to a date.  I've always heard that it is best to do the first weekend in a month, so that would be next weekend.  Right now I have a living room full of boxes so I want to do it sooner rather than later.  But now that we are headed out of town for at least a day this week, we'll see how that goes.

  • Sweet. We need to clean out our garage so bad and I want to have a garage sale. Any money I'd make would go to my paint the house fund.
