Anyone making their own wedding cakes?

I plan on making my own wedding cake. It will probably be a small 3 tiered fondant covered cake. Anyone have any hints or tips about making your own that would be of value? Thanx in advance!

Try posting on the budget weddings board.  There might be someone doing it over there.

You might want to try the DIY board too, they're pretty crafty.

Just a couple of things.  >Practice!  If you have never covered a cake in fondant before, you should do a couple of practice cakes.  >  Make sure you have sufficient supports in your cake, sure don't want it toppling over!>Wilton fondant is not the best tasting thing out there..and is not the only type of fondant available.  Try Satin Ice brand, or you can even make your own and flavor can be added to it.>Also, take into consideration all the things that will be going on in the days leading up to your wedding.  Maybe work with a friend beforehand that you can trust to take care of the last minute cake detail, such as setting it up and adding flowers, if you choose. Good luck!

I agree with emelina about finding someone to help you just in case.  Most brides experience a lot of last minute chaos so you might appreciate having an extra set of hands.  One of my friends is a professional pastry chef so she made her own wedding cake, but she still found it be to be really stressful (just the act of transporting it can cause a few gray hairs lol).

I'm not sure what city you're in, but if there's a Joann Fabrics near you, you could take one of their Wilton courses beforehand to practice. Sometimes the community colleges offer them also as a continuing ed program.

Hi I'm doing my wedding cake too. But I have done 4 fondant cakes before. Not too much experience but I know what I'm getting into. My best advice is do not overspend, because it can come up to the same as a wedding cake from let's say Publix....$250-$400.Watch a lot of videos of how to put fondant in youtube.com and to stack cakes one on top of the other. You need dowels for support. And if when you are looking for decoration I recommend this website http://www.discountsugarflowers.com/default.aspxI already order my flowers and they are beautiful!!!!

Thanks for all the advice! Thankfully, since my wedding isn't for another year and seven months, I've got plenty of time to practice! And I don't have to worry about transporting it because we're having our wedding at his parents house (I can just make it there). And actually the whole reason I decided to make my own cake is because when I said I was just going to buy one from Publix, my friends talked me out of it and almost insisted I make my own with their help (I already make fondant cakes). I love my guy friends :P
