FAMILY STYLE

We are having our wedding at the Desert Botanical Garden ( for those of you who know it, in the Wildflower pavillion, not the house at the top of the hill).  We are using Santa Barbara Catering and doing long tables of 20. We are serving family style which I am really happy with. My question is, I have never been to a famliy style reception. Has anyone been to one and what were the possitives and negatives. We have already decided to go in this direction but I just want to be prepared. Thanks so much!

We were going to go with a family style reception, and this is the feedback we received.Positiveso Guests would be able to choose what and how much they eato Guests don't have to get up from their seats to get more foodo Family style can be an ice breaker, because guests have to interact with each otherNegativeso Centerpiece options are limited, because the center of the table will be occupied by the disheso Some people don't have basic manners, and will eat directly off the platter We went with a different venue, so we never got to try it out.  I personally liked the idea, and thought it was unique.

I went to a wedding at the DBG (Dorrance Hall) and they did theirs family style. It was great, I loved it! Yummmmm! PP said something about centerpieces being limited, which is true, but they actually used the food as their centerpieces. They had these really cool bronze three-tiered food trays (not sure what to actually call them) with some flowers tucked here and there in them, those were the centerpieces. The food went directly on them and there was always food on it so it did not look strange and empty at any time. When we sat down there was already food on them, olives, cheeses, meats, that kind of Italian starter food. Then salads came out and went on them. Then entrees, then platters of desserts.
