Mac users

I need a new laptop and am considering a Macbook. Mostly I just use my laptop for browsing, email, the usual stuff. But I only have some PC versions of some software that I need - Microsoft Visio, Adobe CS. Would I be able to install and use these on a Mac without buying new versions?

Re: Mac users

  • Im pretty certain you need mac versions of those programs for them to work.
  • Bill loves all things Mac and is pretty sure there is not a Mac version of Visio.
  • You would have to have Mac versions. I'm using a mac at work and a pc at home, I have to say I think the pc is a little more user friendly, but it may be just because I've only ever used a pc. The macbook pro at work is pretty and sleek and cool looking though :)

  • Juliebug is correct, there is no version of visio for mac - everything else in the microsoft office package is available except visio. http://www.visioformac.com/ explains it.
  • http://www.visioformac.com/Ringpop, I just googled it for you to make sure he was right and it seems that he is.  He did say that there lots of good flowcharting software available for Macs but, if Visio is what you need for work, then you might be out of luck.  You can run Windows in VM Fusion (I'm just quoting now) and it could work reasonably well.
  • Darn :( I definitely need Visio. ... Would I be able to use it on say, Windows for Mac, or like virtual PC?

  • I would say yes. In the office I used to work in, we all had macs but used RDC (remote desktop connection?) to go into a regular windows screen and use certain programs there. We had all the microsoft office set in there, and then adobe stuff on the regular mac.
  • OK there is hope :)Yeah the most resource-intensive thing I do on my computer is use Adobe stuff, particularly Photoshop. Although it does seem silly to be running a PC version of Adobe on virtual PC on a mac. But the alternative, buying a new one, or even upgrading, is soooo expensive...

  • I know I'm super late, but maybe you'll see this.  I'm not familiar with those programs, but all new Macbooks should include a copy of boot camp, which lets you boot up in Mac OS or Windows.  If your programs work with Windows, it's possible they'll work when you're booted up in Windows on your Mac.  But someone at the Apple Genius Bar should be able to tell you for sure.

I just bought a Mac 2 weeks ago (thank you, wedding gift money) and LOVE it. Some things are weird to get use too. And I hate that I can't cut and paste PIP on here. And for some reason I can't make the above text italics. But back to your question... Boot Camp comes with all new computers and you can choose how much of your hard drive you want dedicated to Windows. You just need a licensed copy of Windows to install on it. Then if you want to run a program, you just hold down the control button when you restart the computer and choose to start it up in Windows. There is another program called Parallels which is the same thing, but it isn't free. But what that, you can run Mac and Windows side by side without restarting.
  • Do you know anyone affiliated with a university who can buy the software for you?  I know we can get our faculty CS4 for starting at around $200, as opposed to $1000 straight from Adobe.I used to RDC into my PC desktop from my Mac laptop all the time, but you will notice it being slower, especially with processor-heavy programs like the Adobe suite.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • Oh! And you can get the educational discount. I have been out of college for 8 years and when I bought it on the website, I just plugged in my school and it gave me $200 off. Plus a rebate for a free iTouch! It won't work at the store unless you have a valid school ID but online they don't check up on you!
