Another Shower Question

My FI and I were invited to a shower for two dear friends of ours; it's a Jack & Jill shower and I had to get that clarified on another board. So the background is that we're paying $20 each to attend this shower; we were also given a bunch of tickets to sell to people we know. So here are my questions:

1. How do I nicely return these tickets? I'm not very excited about the entire concept to begin with and we're going to the shower because we love them - I just don't want to participate in that part.

2. Do we also have to bring a present? I really don't know and I would have paid more than $20 for a shower present anyway.

3. I usually take cash to any event anyway, but are we also expected to pay for other tthings? Like the games or food or drinks or anything - please treat me dumb on this because I really don't know. I've never had to pay to even go to a shower before so I'm just assuming there are other things I may have to pay for.

So any advice would be useful - I really appreciate it.

<div>1. Just return them to who gave them to you or throw them out</div><div>
</div><div>2. No you usually don't have to bring any sort of gift; the ticket purchase is your gift</div><div>
</div><div>3. Yes bring cash, these things are usually cash bars, and have raffles and such to raise more money for the bride and groom</div>

  • I think Ollie is right, but I wouldn't throw the tickets out. Do they have a registry? My guess is no.
  • I searched the usual contenders and didn't find a registry - Target, JC Penny, C&B, Macy's and BB&B.

I will definitely take extra cash, but I'm feeling a little uncomfortable about this; we didn't actually take the tickets either. We just came home one day and there was a box on the patio table with a note.

    Raffles? What sort of raffles?

  • Raffles like a gift basket with themed stuff or tickets and other gifts.  I've never been to one but I am somewhat familiar.  The B&G are probably saving for a house which is why they want money instead of gifts.  $20 seems pretty steep though.

I had a social, which is sort of the same concept (but different). In our instance NO ONE was forced to go what so ever, people love to go to them.

Our jack & jill will be a bbq or something of the sort, it is just a couples shower here.

I find it tacky that they expect you to sell tickets to people they don't know. We had people we did not know at our social (most we knew) but they got tickets from the store that sells them, not right from us obviously.

I would not buy a gift, but take extra money for the raffles, i know i had some pretty good prizes like a laptop, maybe they will too.

  • My wedding party just hosted a Jack & Jill for us this past Saturday.

Here's what I have to say:

-Typically, this is instead of a normal bridal shower.
-Do not bring a gift. They "cover charge" of the ticket is in place of that. Our tickets were $15 each or 2 for $25
-If you or FI are not part of the wedding party, you should not be expected to try and sell tickets. Only our wedding party and our parents were the ones selling the tickets.
-They should have food available (free of charge) but typically it's a cash bar.
-There are raffles going on, so if you would like, bring money for that. It is not required of you to purchase anything extra from the ticket to get in. Our WP had multiple raffles, along with a 50/50 raffle. My uncle won the 50/50 raffle and actually gave the winnings back to us. I was so shocked, but that's the type of guy he is (and one reason he's walking me down the aisle). Love him dearly.
-All of the proceeds go to the bride & groom to be put towards the cost of the wedding.
-Ours had a DJ with a lot of dancing going on. I posted pics on FB if you wanted to check them out.

I know a lot of people side eye something like this, but they are really fun.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
