Im a speech therapist :0)For grad school, the only programs left in Nj are:MontclairKeanWilliam PattersonSeton HallI went to Seton Hall which had its highs and lows...the low being it is a private catholic school and therefore super expensive. The high- I learned so much and had some great placements!Any of those schools will be pretty much comparable in terms of the program. If you have more specific questions, feel free to ask!
Understandable! What do you do now? For me, grad school was a lot of work, but totally worth it. I am lucky enough to love my job! I have had some friends who went back to school to do SLP, so let me know if I can help with anything!! Good luck! (PS, I had to post this and run, but if you need anything, you can e-mail me at Shaz829 @ aol.com)
Oooh.. this is what I want to get a master's in. I'm currently a Teacher- will I have to take any undergrad classes to do a master's program? (I has a bachelors in Soc.)
My cousin is a school psychologist and she says the same things about being aggrevated b/c she spends so much time on evals etc. that she doesnt even really get to the treatment part! That must be frustrating
I'm really close with our school psych so I totally understand. Do they tell you that it will be more paperwork than kid-time when you're in school for that? Cuz I would think that you really do go into that field with the idea of actually getting to work with the kids but that doesn't seem to be the case.
Butting in! I researched extensively because I want to get a degree in SLP, and there is a major roadblock. I'm a teacher (as I'm sure are many people looking into this as a masters program), and you cannot get through the entire program in the evening or summers! You will have to be available at some point during the day for the field work portion of the program. This means you'd have to take a sabbatical, which I know my district would never go for. If I'm wrong (crossing fingers hoping someone tells me I'm wrong!), please let me know of a program that is offered completely during the evening, weekends, and summers...because I've spoken to people at Kean, MSU, WPU, and SHU, and they all said the same, depressing thing. I suppose this is a field you decide to get in while still an undergrad and then just flow right into the masters program. Such a shame they don't have programs for this career path that accomodate the people who would likely be most interested in pursing the profession...teachers!
I know Kean does offer night classes, but yes at some point im guessing you would have to do your clinicals during school hours...although you can do clinicals over the summer....Also, you can look into online programs (Nova Southeastern, University of Cincinnati online) they have SLP programs
My psych cert program was the same way. You could take most of the classes at night at some point, however you had to do interships/observations in schools, which obviously has to happen during the day, so at some piont you have to not be working
i know this is off on another tangent...but perhaps consider sign language for the deaf...lots of work...pays great...and can be done at night...even community colleges have certificate programs.
