Mother of the Bride Mumbai Wedding

I'd really appreciate some guidance. I'm a non-Indian mother of the bride going to a Hindu wedding and all the surrounding events in Mumbai. I'll be wearing a saree to the ceremony and am not sure what to wear to the reception. I've seen some really pretty things on a site called Bargello, but many of these outfits are described a Pakastani.
Are there styles that are not so great to wear to a Mumbai wedding? How dressy and what is appropriate for the Sangeet?

Hi there! Welcome the boards! Where are you located in the world? It might be easier for us to determine where your local stores are before shopping on the internet.

    Reception outfits -

What my mom wore to the reception was a ghagra / lehnga which was equally as stunning as what I wore, but it fit her tastes.

www.kand2k.com \ click on Memories \ click on Wedding and Reception \ Picture 21 of 32 for the full length. I'm in gold/blue, and mom is in fuschia/blue.

A site for that would be: http://khaasboutique.com/khaasboutique/shopping.asp?p=2&cat=Ghagras -- all of their outfits are customizable and the blouse can be made to meet the skirt edge, or more. (that's what I did at least)

I went to a few weddings where the mother-of-the-bride (MOB) wore a very heavy embroidered saree - with plenty of sequences, and another who wore a silk saree.

What I'm saying is - the reception is an equally (equal to the wedding outfit) stunning outfit - whether it be a saree or a lehnga/ghagra (blouse+skirt+shawl/dupatta). It's whatever you feel comfortable in wearing.

Re Bargello / Pakistani - Are these styles that are not so great to wear to a Mumbai wedding? There's nothing wrong with wearing anything from bargello to wear as a reception outfit. I don't really think you can tell the difference between Pakistani and Indian unless you say something about it.

How dressy and what is appropriate for the Sangeet?

For the sangeet, you can do a kameez shalwar (long shirt+pants+shawl/dupatta) or a sari. It's a participation event, so if you feel comfortable moving around in a sari great!

To get an idea, I'm posting a lot of links:

A bit on the expensive side, but you get an idea on selected pictures / videos: http://www.maharaniweddings.com/maharani/sangeet/

Thanks so much for the information!! I do live on Long Island and will definately go to some of the places you listed.
Your wedding was beautiful and your outfit and your mother's were lovely.
One more question, I'm still stuck on a couple of things from Bargello. One outfit is called a crimp (?). Is this a style or just a particular item. Any ideas?
    Thanks again.

Hi there - thanks for the well wishes. I looked at the bargello site, and a lot of their outfits have the word "crimp" in it. From wikipedia, "crimp" denotes the wavey-ness of the fabric. I think they use that term interchangeably with crinkle chiffon or just plain chiffon which is a good material for the outfit.

I would be careful about ordering from Bargello. I've read some really bad reviews online about them and the quality of their work.

I would definitely go to the local stores to check out what they have. I agree, online stores you have no way of telling the quality from the pictures.

That's for sure. I had my heart set on this one lehenga. My sweet fiance ordered it for me from dmi-india.com and the lehenga I got and the lehenga my fiance thought he ordered were 2 completely different things and it didn't even come close to fitting. I would've been ok with it had it fit and at least looked pretty. ugg. They wouldn't give our money back or even make an exchange. I've heard similar horror stories about Bargello.

This was great information. I was close to ordering from bargello although I was a little nervous about it. I'll definately go to some of the relatively local stores.
    Thanks for the input

If you see something you like at bargellos, it's very possible to get a custom outfit through one of the onsite tailors at the local stores. At least then, you can bug them face to face, rather by email, or phone :)
