Traveler Insurance??

For those who have purchased traveler insurance, and maybe actually had to use it, what exactly does it cover? Any companies you would recommend?

Also, what exactly does it mean when someone says they were "bumped" from their resort, or particular flight? This has never happened to me before in all  my travels, but I seem to read about it in passing a lot on these message boards and I am curious if it is something that happens particularly a lot in resorts or something?

Is this "bumping" something that is covered by traveler insurance?

I have heard good and bad things about the traveler insurance. Good that it will cover if we need to reschedule, get sick while on vacation, etc. Bad that it won't cover if say we end up getting an awful storm and we are stuck in the room the entire trip, because we didn't get sent home.. so I am a little torn on whether or not it is worth the extra $$.

Thanks ladies!

Re: Traveler Insurance??

  • We got our insurance from insuremyrtrip.com because you can compare lots of different insurance companies. You need to read through the information thoroughly before you decide on which one to purchase. I would say you should for sure get it though.

As for being 'bumped' from a resort or airplane: I have never heard of people being bumped from a resort. People will sometimes get bumped from a flight because they have overbooked but they usually make up for it with free flight vouchers or an upgrade on the next flight. They usually ask for volunteers first and then might just bump the last people who show up. I know it happens but I don't think it is likely to happen to you.

  • what's covered or not depends on the terms, limits and conditions of the individual policy.

    ive used insuremytrip.com for years.

I've always gotten travel insurance when travelling outside of the country.

As pp said, health insurance is a big one! If you go into Mexico for example, your travel insurance card will make sure you get taken to a hospital recognized by the travel insurance company and not a place that is ... not as qualified to put it lightly.

I'm not sure what you mean by bumping .. I've never experienced that.

I was in Germany when the Iceland volcano erupted and ended up being stranded there. My insurance covered hotel costs, (the airline covered the flights), any long distance phone calls I needed to make for arrangements, food ... basically anything i needed to do after the time I was supposed to leave! I had like $5000 coverage. I definitely did not go to Europe thinking I would need it. I would for sure get it - Murphy's Law!

I can't give you any suggestions because I live in Canada haha

Edit: I can't give you any suggestions on which broker to go to ..... lol
  • Thanks for the advice! I will most definitely get traveler insurance before leaving the country after learning more about it! And after using the websites you all provided and learning how truly inexpensive it is, it really is worth it! Thanks a lot!
  • Hi - We selected a company called Travel Insured after comparing companies online, and then had our travel agent arrange the policy that we chose. This company got very good reviews and they have a variety of plans to choose from so you can pick what works for you. We picked a policy that insured the whole trip including flights, resort, delays, unexpected health issues, etc. There are some stipulations regarding when the insurance needs to be purchased in relation to when the trip is booked so make sure you read the fine print.
