Spinning?

Have you done this before?  Did you like it?  Will I fall off the seat?  Is there anything I should know?  I am leaving in a while to go to a spinning class.  You can choose to do an hour or add on another half of intense.  I am just doing the first hour with warm up.  My knee still hurts for the treadmill so thought this would be good since the bike has been ok.  I took a class a while ago somewhere else but everyone complained about the class after, boring.

Re: Spinning?

  • I love spinning.  Unfortunately, my current gym doesn't offer it.  You will not fall off the seat, but your butt will probably hurt after the class (especially if you are not used to riding a bike).  I recommend bike shorts or capris to avoid chafing (made that mistake at my first class).
  • I've taken really good classes and some really bad ones. It depends on the instructor. The good ones were both fun and challenging. I don't think you'll fall off the seat. I know when I used to do it, I'd be a lot more sore from the seat than from regular bike riding.

  • yes love it no you will not (I hope not)it works wonders, you will feel like jello tomorrow! Stand up while doing it for as long as you can.
  • yes, have the instructor help you adjust the seat.  But please, arrive early so the class is not held up by your seat adjustment.
  • I've heard from others that it makes the booty bigger. I change up my workout all the time so I'll do it once in awhile. I like it only when I do change up the routine else it gets so monotonous.Have you tried the elliptical for low impact on the knees? I don't do the treadmill because of it.
  • I wish I would have adjusted the seat before I took my first class. I swear I was in pain for a couple of days after.
  • The falling off the seat was kind of a joke, kind of.  Good to know, I'll ask for my seat to be adjusted.  I have cushion so my bootie should be ok.
  • Yep, I spin once or twice a week.  I love it.You will not fall off the seat.  Part of the reason I like spinning is because it is klutz-proof.  You literally sit and pedal.  It might make your butt and vag hurt if the instructor does a lot of jumps, where you get up and down off the seat.  I usually feel a little bowl-legged afterwards. Advice: wear long pants or capris.  I find that if I wear shorts they get bunched up and I'm pulling them down all the time. And yeah, spinning can suck if the instructor or music is bad.  A good instructor can be really motivating.  I love one of the people at my gym but not the other.Good luck and have fun!

  • Paused to spin, and I really liked it. It's better when you have a really good teacher who really coordinates the workout with the music. The main reason I stopped going is because my favorite instructor stopped teaching and I didn't like the style of any of the others. One important piece of advice....WEAR BIKE SHORTS. This is necessary. I didn't for my first class, and afterward I thought I wouldn't be able to have children.

  • I got halfway through your post before I realized this has nothing to do with records. I'm kind of disappointed...

  • I do the elliptical too, usually treadmill for a half hour than the elliptical on high low hill for a half.  It gets boring sometimes so I thought to try this.
  • Have you done this before? YesDid you like it? Yes, especially if there is good musicWill I fall off the seat? No, unless it isn't adjusted correctlyIs there anything I should know?Padded bike shorts or a bike seat pad make the experience much more enjoyable--you will be hurting in your nether regions otherwise (though if it is your first time spinning, you will anyway)Pedal with your feet flat and pull up when you spin in addition to pedaling downKeep your shoulders and upper body relaxed

  • Don't you burn something ridiculous like 800 calories in a spin class?
  • Yes, it is supposed to be a lot of calories and sweating.  I am leaving, pray for me.  I'm armed with a giant water bottle and a towel.
  • Meaghan, it depends on your weight/effort level.  I usually burn 550-600 calories/class according to my heart rate monitor (it has a chest strap, so it's accurate).

  • Good luck and let us know how it goes, I am terrified of spinning despite all the positive reviews.
  • yeah, you're a better woman than I... good luck!
  • I hate bikes.  If I wanted that kind of soreness, Id ride one of my FI's family's horses. Spinning is intense.  I'm competitive so I always have to be the fastes, work out the longest, etc.  That is not fun to do in a spin class. How about the rowing machine? Or a cross trainer machine?
  • I confess I don't really understand what spinning is.  Someone explain it to me.  Is it the same thing as an stationary exercise bike?  Is it just a class of vigorous bike riding but with a different name?  Do spinning bikes go up and down or something like a treadmill?

"Whatever East. You're just mad I RSVP'd "lame" to your pre-wedding sleepover."
  • I've done it; I also did my own pace when I couldn't keep up with the instructor.I did like it - I did like an "express" class of 30 minutes with FI before he'd go to work.NopeIf you really get into spinning and also want to do regular cycling, I HIGHLY suggest cycling shorts (i.e. spandex with the diaper/pad). You can wear other shorts/clothes on top of them, but they will make the seat more comfortable.Take a towel, take a water bottle.  I wear my cycling shorts when I go, but they aren't necessary (see above).  I also wear my clipless shoes, but those aren't necessary. It was more for my practice earlier this year.If your knees bother you (I have a bad knee, and the muscles around mine are not strong), don't do the standing up riding yet. Get there early if you think you'll need help getting the seat/bars to the right height (I always do).

I love you Missy. Even though you are not smart enough to take online quizzes to find out really important information. ~cew
  • Oh another big thing I forgot is to pay attention to your form.  Your instructor should be reminding you of this throughout the class as well.Head above the heart at all times.  Having your head down, chin by your chest, isn't going to make the bike go any faster.Try and keep your chest lifted up and your back flat.  This will take the pressure off your lower back and sitz bones.  It is also much easier for your lungs to inflate if your chest is not all hunched in.I think that's the basics.
  • I love spinning class - I started going last month and its so much fun now. Sucks during (because its hard), but so worth it afterwardsBring a big bottle of water and a big towel. Ive lost a lot of inches on my thighs surprisingly since starting it last month too, so it must be doing some good.
  • East - it's riding stationary bikes in unison with an instructor and music.  You can adjust the tension on the bike to simulate going uphill, etc so you don't just sit there whirling your feet around.  A good instructor and good music make all the difference.  It's a great workout.  And you can adjust your tension/pace to make it your ride - and it's not obvious, so if you're new and not the most intense in the class no one will know it.

  • It really hurt a lot.  The seat is tiny, not like the regular bike seats and I understand why you need bike shorts.  I'm buying them for my next class to wear under my pants.  You sweat like crazy and it felt so good.  I feel like pounds melted off and sweating was detoxifying.  I signed up for Sunday morning because it hurts too much.  The music was really loud and fast house.  Very energetic instructor and the best advice was from salt to have the seat adjusted.
  • Glad to hear you enjoyed it! I dont personally have bike shorts, but Ive noticed that my butt doesnt hurt almost at all after class now like it did after the first one.
  • I want to add spinning and rowing to my regular workout so it might be good to get it for spinning.  If I have it with me, there is no excuse not to take it.
  • Ive been told by my instructor that if I plan on doing this regularly now (which I do), it is beneficial to the work out to get shoes specifically for the bike. I might look into both to be honest.
  • The clip shoes do help--otherwise my feet go numb halfway throughAlso, keep your head up and don't lean over...good way to pass out (almost did it myself)
