hand-cancelling invites?

Is this a must? I did DIY invites from Michaels and it says to have them hand-cancelled- will all post offices do this and does it cost more? Opinions on whether its necessary? Our outer envelopes are dark chocolate brown. TIA!!

Re: hand-cancelling invites?

  • I asked my post office about it, and she demonstrated on one. It looked neat, but totally seemed superfluous.
  • From everything I read when I was planning, it seems pointless.  It only saves your invites from going through one machine, they will still go through all the others.  I don't really see the point.

  • Is this a must?Very little in the way of wedding planning is a must.  We did not hand-cancel our invites.  Our marriage is just as valid as those who did hand-cancel theirs, only we have more money left in pocket.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

  • Okay thanks! I wasnt sure and it seems like more trouble than it is worth.
  • Depends how thick they are.  The post office has a template they use to gauge if the invite is 'machinable'.  If it's too thick, they can't send it thru the machine and will charge .20 extra postage for hand cancelling. I did photo stamps and didn't want the wavy black lines across our faces, so I took them to the clerk and asked them to be hand-cancelled.   It was no problem and no extra cost.

  • I didn't have mine hand-cancelled.  It's not necessary at all unless the envelopes won't go through the machine for some reason.
  • I live in a small town, and the lady who works at our post office told us she'd hand cancel them for us because she gets bored. She's awesome. Turns out they would have had to be hand-cancelled anyway since they're considered non-machinable.But no, it's not necessary.

  • I had the same ones (well, the brown outer-envelopes from Michaels) and I didn't have it done.  All I did with mine was use some glue tape to make sure the envelopes stayed closed; mine only came with an envelope seal and I wasn't too confident in it.I have heard that even if you get them hand canceled, they will still go through a machine later in the mailing process anyway, so it's kind of pointless.
  • I did them just so that they looked better.  First 50 are free and it was 5 cents each after that.
