Not a mom, but my favorite kids book (sold a lot of them at the book store I used to work at) is Each Peach Pear Plum. It is a rhyming plus I spy book with great illustrations. "Each peach pear plum, I spy Tom Thumb. Tom Thumb in the cupbard I spy Mother Hubbard..."
Maggie loves anything interactive, especially ones with a lift-the-flap (Karen Katz in particular). The sturdier the flap, the better. Pat the BunnyAnything with pictures of babies or animalsAny Sandra BoyntonRhyming books
I like most things Eric Carle - The Very Hungry Caterpillar and the Grouchy Ladybug are Will's favorites. Will really likes a book my MIL gave him called "This is the Baby" about a baby that hates getting dressed, he likes the rhyming and pointing out all of the articles of clothing. Will really likes Richard Scarry too, my brother gave him a set of books about various modes of transportation and Will LOVES them. "Truck! TRUUUUUUUCK!!! CAAAAAAAAAAR!!" Bethie gave Will "Hippos Go Berserk" by Sandra Boynton, and we all like that one (though there are some other Boynton books that bug me). Oh, and I love this book (and others by this author) because they're cute, and the caretaker can either be mommy or daddy (or grandma or grandpa or whoever) since it's never named. I hate books that are all "Mommy said this while she was washing the dishes, Daddy came home from work blah blah blah." Oh, and we got this book from Will's pediatrician (except the English/Spanish version) and he LOVES flipping the flaps over to find the baby. We have Grover and Corduroy, they are a little long for a one year old but great for the long term library. The Tad Hills Duck and Goose board books are really cute too. Maggie loves Duck and Goose Find a Pumpkin.
If your friend's daughter is anything like many 1 year olds who are obsessed with repetitive book reading, she'll be grateful for the variety of books. If I have to read this crappy Sesame Street book I got in the dollar bin at Target one more time, I may gouge my eyes out.
my favorite kids book:they're making a movie about it. i have mixed feelings. don't ruin my favorite kids book, man.
Oh god, I know Kristen. Will likes this terrible Sesame Street colors book, it has no story line, and there are way too many colors in it to be useful for learning (seriously? Will needs to know the difference between tan, brown, and chocolate brown?). I hid it on Thursday.
