My wedding date was taken

Well bummer, we found the most amazing wedding location but my desired date (Memorial Day weekend, that Saturday) was taken. I want to move wedding to Labor Day weekend for those who are traveling from OOT-so they have more time to travel. (mainly my FI family)FI wants to make it the weekend before Memorial Day and says that if a guest will travel on a holiday weekend they will probably come on a regular weekend. (He says if a few of his family members cannot attend it is not a big deal to him).Any thoughts are appreciated

I would actually prefer not traveling on a holiday weekend because costs are higher.

That is a good point. I just checked out flights for the weekend prior to holiday weekends..they are cheaper. My FI may win this one

Holiday weekends are risky, because sometimes people have long-standing vacation plans with family that they may not want or be able to change.Honestly, I think the weekend before might be even trickier, though. At least if they travel to your wedding, they get to travel somewhere. Few people can afford to travel two weekends in a row.

I'd rather not spend my holiday long weekend going to a wedding actually. I have taken time off to go to a wedding before. I don't see an issue personally. WHen I was on salary or paid by the hour. If I want to go to someone's wedding I will take the time to travel.

I would also prefer a non-holiday weekend, just because I usually have other plans on holidays that I would hate to have to break.

ditto pp. I'd rather go to a wedding on a regular weekend than give up my fourth of july, memorial day, labor day, etc. I wouldn't so much mind giving up a presidents' day, columbus day, or veteran's day. Sorry your date was taken, though! I hope it all works out.

We had ours the weekend before a holiday - on a Sunday no less - and his family (which lives primarily on the opposite coast from us) all came!Have faith.. if they really want to be there, they will make a way!

We chose to have our wedding the weekend after Memorial Day so we would not screw up anybody's holiday plans. I don't think it affected who would come and who wouldn't by not having it on a holday weekend. Personally I would be more inclined to skip a holiday weekend OOT wedding, due to higher costs and just the general aggrivation of travelling on holidays.

Good point about the two weekends in a row...but if we do it the second week of May we compete with graduation at a big college. I wanted to avoid that. My FI did say that his family members who will travel have holiday vacation days they can take too. You all make great points. I think I was trying to make it easier on guests, but I think I was making it harder! :)Thank you.

Hi fische, Friday is out because we are traveling from the state we currently live in to have the wedding in the state I moved from

We will arrive Thursday to get prepared for a Saturday wedding. I have always been set on a Saturday wedding, outdoor ceremony in the evening. Those were my only "wants" I guess you could say

If your guests really want to come to your wedding, they will come regardless of when you have it, unless you pick a major holiday weekend, like Christmas. Memorial and Labor aren't what I would consider 'major' holidays and shouldn't create major issues. With respect to flights, consider where your guests are flying from and to. For example, we're flying to Europe on our honeymoon and we happen to be leaving on Memorial Day. Doing so actually saved us $1,000 over going a week later.

Traveling on a holiday weekend is not more convenient. Airfare and hotels are often higher priced, not to mention busier, since more people tend to travel those weekends. Also, not a lot of people like the idea of giving up their holiday weekends for a wedding. Some people like having those weekends to do family mini-vacations or to just relax. Your FI is right. Anyone who is willing to travel that weekend will more than likely be willing to travel another. In fact, you may find people who are not willing to give up their holidays for you may be more willing to attend on a regular one.

Hi Aerin, We did think about that, however after talking to his family and friends (who would have to travel) they did say they were going to use our wedding as a vacation as well. Plus mid May the weather is not to cold or too hot and there is so much to do. We have fun activities planned in case anyone wants to join in, or they can go off on their own

Tickets are cheaper and the hotel will give better discounts for our guests. I do see how it could be risky the weekend before a long weekend-but FI is set on having it in May (since we had to postpone already due to various reasons). For some reason he wants me to be his wife (silly man, haha) Thanks gals!

haha...termenty, you made me smile! Well afterall it is a place to ask questions, I agree I have seen some people go off the handles (pretty funny) Supernova, I agree. I get super stressed out too traveling during holiday weekends. Do you think that May 22nd would be a bad travel time? I mean I realize some people will take of that entire next week and weekend to have a long holiday-I am hoping that it will not be too expensive since it is not really considered a "holiday" weekend. Thanks again gals.

We specifically picked a non holiday weekend because we didn't want our family and friends pissed off to be traveling on their 3 day weekends. I know I'd be pretty peeved if someone took my labor day weekend away from me.

BTW, we just got married this last weekend, the weekend right after Labor day and there was a great turn out number. A lot of guests from the other side of the country. I know if we had picked Labor day, a lot of them wouldn't have come.

I would prefer not to have to devote my Memorial Day or Labor Day to traveling for a wedding. Also, Labor Day is really tough for teachers and anyone with school-age children...it's all right around back to school time.
