Tip $ Question...

I read in one of the posts last week that if you're venue charges a service charge that you don't need to give a tip.My venue is a package deal, includes the following: Photography, cake, wedding coordinator, DJ...everybody who you would normally tip. (At least I think so.) So since they already require a 20% service charge, do I need to STILL tip individually? Thanks for any help that comes my way!  :-)

Re: Tip $ Question...

  • You need to ask them if that service charge is passed along as a tip or if it is kept by the house.  If part of it is passed on but not all, you may need to tip in addition.  They should be able to tell you what is customary there, as well.

  • You should check with your venue about this.  Sometimes the service charge is considered the gratuity or includes the gratuity.  Sometimes the service charge is just to cover the wages off the staff.
  • My venue was sort of the same, the final bill included a gratuity that was supposed to cover everyone involved. My dad still gave the wait-staff cash at the end of the night becasue he felt they were excellent. We also sent thank yous to our planner, day of co-ordinator and some others which included a tip to show our appreciation. I don't think it's really necessary but we liked knowing that each staff got what we thought they deserved.
  • A service charge is not necessarily a tip, but you need to ask your venue about this.  We were told that the service charge went to pay the workers.  Our venue also suggested a tip amount of about 5%, so that's what we did.  Ask them and find out what's standard.  You don't want to shortchange people.
