Name change/being able to vote?

So, we're all getting married within a month before the election....

Have any of you researched what happens if you're still in the process of name changing (like, waiting for paperwork/IDs to be sent to you) on election day? I get back from my honeymoon on the 18th and don't even know when I'll get a chance to go to the SS office/DMV to change my name... anyone know how this works? I almost want to wait until after the election to start changing my name.

Re: Name change/being able to vote?

  • Hi! I am not an Oct bride but just went through the name changing process and had the same exact question. From the time I sent in the form to when I received confirmation was a little over two weeks (and that's after I went to DMV and the SS office). You may want to check with your state... The state of NJ cuts off voting registration and changes 21 days before the election. So, it may make sense to wait. HTH! Congratulations!!!

  • Yea, I will most likely wait. Good question.

  • Here in TN you have to be registered 30 days before voting, so I will be voting early on the 19th. It's the day after we get back from our honeymoon. I live 2 hours away from where I'm registered, and since we'll be flying into Nashville (where I'm registered), I'll just go ahead and do it then.

  • I'm not sure you actually need an ID to vote. I'm pretty sure that's been heavily debated lately with states trying to implement that  to keep illegals from voting, (we had a big scandal regarding that here in last years election) so it might not even be an issue.

  • I don't think it will be an issue, like they said they do not check IDs and as long as you ID matches your registration, I think it would be fine. I think I am going to wait to get my info switched over until the end of November, hopefully I will be getting a new job by then and it is easier to change once you are employed than in the middle of the process.

  • I'm probably going to either vote early or wait to change my name. I get married on the 20 so its not like I'll be having to wait incredibly long.

  • I just got a new Driver's License in August because mine was expired, and I registered to vote in NY. (previous license was IN). My voter registration card has my current name on it, and it took a few weeks for that (and my license) to come in the mail... I think I might wait on the name change just to be sure. (Also, the thought of going back to the Manhattan DMV makes me want to NEVER change my name, but I will).
  • I'm early voting (my registration is in OH, where we'll be going to and from our honeymoon) so I don't have to worry about any of it. Ohio does check ID and I just got my TN license but it's too close to the election to register down here. So I'll change my registration when I change my name, which will be after the election.

  • NY voter registration is over, I believe, but I'm just waiting on changing it legally until after the election just in case. I'll probably only change it on Facebook before then ha.

  • I called and asked about this, if your licence doesn't match your voter registration card, they said to bring your marriage certificate.  They told me that normally isn't necessary, just incase.  As long as you have something else with your old name on it, credit card, library card, whatever, most of the people checking them will let you vote.

<div>I think that's what I'll have to do too. I'm registered in NY, and don't want to risk that.</div><div>
</div><div>Also - how insanely crowded are the polls here? This is my first NYC one. I live in Astoria...</div>
  • We will be on our honeymoon, so we registered for mail in ballots.  If we were around, I would wait to change the name.  When we picked up our license yesterday, the guy said it takes the county about 3 weeks to process and to get a copy to me to even start the process anyway.

<div>Do you have any old bills that are still from Ohio? you might take that instead of your license. I'd hate for them to deny your vote since your license says TN now. </div>

  • If I read the process correctly, you have to do your SS card first THEN do your drivers license.  Maybe you could get started with the SS part before the election but then wait on getting a new license until after the election just in case they ask for ID.  It might not be that long of a wait if the SS office takes a little while to process everything.
